Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas (GSSWT) is headquartered in San Antonio, TX, and serves more than 10,000 Girl Scouts (girls and adults) across 21 counties in southwest Texas. We are currently looking for individuals to fill the following Summer Camp position at Camp La Jita . La Jita, meaning “precious possession”, was aptly chosen as the name for our resident camp on the beautiful Sabinal River near Utopia, Texas. Camp La Jita rests on 236 acres of Texas Hill Country land, one hour and twenty minutes west of San Antonio.

Position Title: Unit Leader

Essential Job Functions:

• Know each girl in the unit and share the interests of each.
• Supervise bedtime and wakeup routines.
• Ensure that girls arrive to program prepared with appropriate clothing, materials, and levels of hygiene.
• Engage in conflict resolution between campers, as necessary.
• Be aware of the health and physical well-being of the campers and report any concerns to the Residential Camp Nurse.
• Ensure that campers receive their daily medications, if necessary.
• Work with Unit Leader 2’s to help girls plan and implement activities for the unit. Camp programs may include, but are not limited to, cookouts, hiking, games, art projects and camping out overnight.
• Assist and direct campers in daily camp chores (called Kapers).
• Communicate with camper guardians on drop-off/pickup days.
• Assist in drop off / pick up day procedures.
• Report any needed repairs or supplies to Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director or Administrative Assistant.
• Report any behavioral concerns to Assistant Camp Director or Camp Director.
• Attend weekly staff meetings.
• Participates in all camp activities.
• Hold campers and other staff members to principles of the Girl Scout Law, to ensure a harmonious environment.
• Acts as a host/hostess for camp visitors and parents.
• Follows and adheres to National and Council policies, procedures, and plans.
• Operates according to ACCT standards and local operational procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Must enjoy working with youths on a one-on-one basis.
• Valid driver’s license and successful completion of a background check.
• Reliable transportation to and from camp site.
• Ability to reside at the camp property for the duration of the camp season with other staff members.
• This position performs its duties indoors and in outdoor weather conditions. This position is exposed to outdoor weather conditions, requiring a tolerance to work in hot summer conditions. Not all sleeping arrangements will be climate controlled.
• Willingness to work as a team member.
• Prior residential camp experience a plus.
• Be flexible, energetic, and have a good sense of humor.
• Must be able to walk long distances.
• Girl Scouts experience is a plus.
• Must attend 2 weeks of training - May 26-29, 2026 and June 1-5, 2026 from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
• Must be available to work and and reside at the camp property during the entire camp sessions June 8 – July 17, 2026.

• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include heavy visual acuity.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen.
• The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, and reach with hands or arms.
• The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Work Environment

• Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering camp programs.
• Work daily with exposure to the sun and heat.
• Staff will be lodging in a cabin with other staff members.
• Staff will be working with groups of campers from 10-20 girls per week.

General Information:

• GSSWT provides applicable trainings and certifications for hired staff.
• All meals and housing arrangements are covered by GSSWT for Overnight Camp positions.
• All staff are considered role models to all campers at GSSWT overnight camps and are expected to participate in camp activities such as all evening camp activities, meals in the lodge, evening camper supervision, and camp check in and check out.
