Reports to Title: Veterinary Medical Director Positions Supervised: Surgical Veterinary Technicians, Surgical Veterinary Office Manager, Surgical Veterinary Assistants, Surgical Volunteers Hours: Tues/Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat 9am-3:30pm Salary: $52 - $62 /per hour Salary Transparency & Budget Note In accordance with Maryland’s pay transparency laws, the salary range for this position is [$52-$62]. Due to budgetary limitations, starting salaries will be offered at the lower end of the range. Job Summary Oversees the surgery operations within the Veterinary Center and the medical care of all shelter residents. Supports Baltimore Humane Society's mission by ensuring high-quality surgical and medical care in alignment with the organization's annual goals and objectives. Assists with the implementation of surgical programs, services, and departmental goals. Reports directly to the Veterinary Medical Director, works in conjunction with the Shelter Director and Executive Director. Medical Responsibilities and Duties Maintain a current Maryland State Veterinary License and Maryland Controlled Dangerous Substance License. Remain in good standing with the Federal DEA. Oversee the use of all controlled substances at BHS and ensure proper record keeping of such substances. Oversee surgical veterinary technicians, surgical veterinary assistants, and surgical volunteer personnel in the spay/neuter center to ensure the established BHS protocols are followed. Ensure overall health, diagnosis, and treatment of adoptable animals. This includes proper intake and screening in accordance with BHS's operating procedures, regular medical examinations, follow-up on known medical issues or needed rechecks/treatments, and proper documentation of animal medical records. Medical exams and records should be completed within 3 days. Maintain the health of all shelter residents and fosters with appropriate preventive veterinary care, surgical sterilization, and treatment for illness and injury that may affect them while at BHS. Ensure all medical and surgical standards are met, and the BHS public low-cost spay/neuter center runs efficiently and effectively. Assist with the development of cleaning protocols for the entire facility to aid in the prevention of infectious/zoonotic disease. Perform and ensure all necessary surgeries (public and shelter) and medical treatments are in accordance with accepted professional standards. When necessary, provide public Wellness exams for routine preventive veterinary care, owner-requested euthanasia, and post-operative surgical rechecks. Outsource veterinary cases as necessary when facilities, equipment, inventory, and/or medical knowledge are not available to manage certain cases. Continued research and maintenance of safe and efficacious medical protocols regarding anesthesia, surgery, and all aspects of shelter medicine. Ensure all equipment in the Veterinary Center is maintained in a safe working order. Ensure preventative maintenance of all surgical and medical equipment is performed per manufacturer guidelines and per any regulatory requirements. Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by veterinary technicians. Assist with the training, development, and education of appropriate shelter and veterinary staff on pertinent medical conditions and any skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission. Effectively communicate medical policies to staff, including proper quarantine and isolation protocol as well as intake/discharge criteria. Be available to discuss significant medical issues with clients. Perform humane euthanasia for public and shelter animals as needed and directed. Render emergency veterinary care as needed during regular business hours. Be available by phone outside of regular business hours for consultation on medical issues (and emergencies) that arise when not onsite. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain state veterinary license in good standing and personal liability insurance. Support operations and administration by advising and informing the Veterinary Medical Director of pertinent medical topics. Operate the Veterinary Center according to policies set by the Veterinary Medical Director and Executive Director. Manage the design, marketing, promotion, delivery, and quality of surgical veterinary programs and services. Identify and implement the goals, objectives, methods, and resources necessary to support the department's programs and day-to-day operations (program planning, project planning, staff Assist the Veterinary Medical Director with a yearly surgical budget proposal for board approval and manage the organization's resources within those budget guidelines. Oversee the human resources of the Veterinary Center according to BHS personnel policies and procedures. Supervise, train, evaluate, and discipline medical staff as needed in order to run the veterinary center efficiently and in accordance with BHS operating procedures. This includes management of any contract veterinarians hired to work at BHS. Assist Director of Development to write and oversee surgical grant applications including planning and implementation, identify resource requirements, approve proposals and administrative records, documentation, and appropriate expenditures. Measure the Veterinary Center's performance with regard to surgical finances and specific program services. Report progress and statistical performance measures to the Veterinary Medical Director as requested. Establish medical protocols and policies for the Veterinary Center and the animal shelter. Other Duties Work closely with and be responsive to not only the Veterinary Medical Director and Executive Director, but the Shelter Director, all coworkers, customers, and volunteers. Provide assistance to other departments as needed. Represent the Baltimore Humane Society in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Provide quality service to clients, volunteers, and staff, recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization. Actively promote spay, neuter, and preventive veterinary care to the community. Educate clients on responsible animal ownership. Participate in committees and special projects as assigned.
