As a Field Service Technician – Network you will install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases (Key Systems, PBX, Centrex Systems, and other business systems). In this position you will perform work associated with splicing and maintaining outside plant facilities and equipment. You will install, splice, repair, and maintain aerial, buried, and/or underground fiber optic and copper cable. As the FST‑Network you will have knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within the field of telecommunications. You will have direct, face‑to‑face contact with our customers and are expected to be proactive with the sales of TDS services and products including Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks. You will exceed customer expectations by performing extraordinary customer service, identifying customer needs, and providing communications solutions. You will also demonstrate TDS products and seek sales opportunities while educating the customer. Products & services include Local Service, Central Office Services, Structured Cabling, MAC (Moves, Adds and Changes), Voice Mail, Audio and/or Video Conferencing, and Non‑regulated CPE. Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the individual selected for this position will be required to reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Pittsboro, IN warehouse located at 17 W Main St – Pittsboro, IN 46167. This position is eligible for a $2,500 sign‑on bonus! (Payout terms apply). This position can be hired at either a Field Service Technician (requisition ID #2026‑29319) or a Field Service Technician‑Network (requisition ID #2026‑29320) level depending on your skills and qualifications. Responsibilities Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products for new and existing customers. Install and configure PBX, Key Systems, Centrex Systems, business systems, fiber terminals, POTS, ISDN, DSL, T‑1s, and DS3s. Identify locations of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, and customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs. Pole climbing and operating construction equipment is required. Locate, identify, and mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage. Keep orderly log of all locate requests. Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities. Install, troubleshoot, test, repair, and maintain central office equipment including switches, operating software, and auxiliary equipment. Maintain backups to switches, voicemail, fiber optic terminals, etc. Update manuals and provide functional support, answering questions about features and functions. Provide advanced troubleshooting support techniques and corrections. Respond to “trouble” dispatches. Provide high‑level support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross‑connects, line groups, network elements). Provide excellent customer service. Proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers. Perform project management for the installation of systems and perform related functions as requested by the supervisor. Physical Demands and Work Environment The role requires sitting, standing, writing, and operating a computer keyboard, standard office equipment, and telephone. The role involves frequent communication with customers, moving about, reaching for items, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. May require balancing or climbing. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The position may require working outdoors, in mechanical or equipment rooms, and possible extreme weather conditions. The associate is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment. Qualifications Required Qualifications One or more years of basic technical telecommunications experience or current/prior military service with honorable discharge. Six months of basic fiber optic and/or copper cable splicing and repair, installation and repair, or switch training. Valid driver’s license. Compliance with TDS attendance guidelines and business needs. Other Qualifications Must successfully complete customer‑specific background checks upon hire. Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities; occasional travel and willingness to work overtime as needed. Successful completion of all Safety Course curriculum components upon hire. Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with a combined GVRW >10,000 lbs. Strong technical understanding of fiber and copper plant installation and troubleshooting. Understanding of telecommunication products and services: Inside Wiring/Cable, Internet/Intranet, Bonding & Grounding, Data & Computers/Transmission Concepts, Fiber Optic Transmission, Static Sensitive Equipment, Color Codes, Structured Wiring, Video/CATV/DBS Installation, Inventory Systems, Cable Locating, Battery Maintenance, Key Systems/PBX, Centrex, Switch Maintenance, Voicemail, Special Circuits, Fiber Terminals, Subscriber CXR Terminals, T‑1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN Voice & Data, testing & certifying loops. Practical knowledge of computer applications: databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Explorer, CD‑ROMs. Independent decision‑making with little or no supervision. Demonstrated customer service and sales skills and effective verbal and written communication. Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task. Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
