Job TitleJob DescriptionQualificationsJob Specific Core Competencies:Performs disinfection and sterilization of supplies, instruments, and equipment.Cleans, wraps, sterilizes, and distributes equipment, supplies and instruments used in patient care.Works effectively with others consistently demonstrating tact, discretion, and a commitment to teamwork.Cleans and inspects instruments and inspects for visual damage.Essential Functions and Responsibilities:Instrument Technician Duties: Responsible for selecting and assembling quality instruments into specified instrument sets. Process instruments, including decontamination, checking sets, wrapping and sterilization. Check the OR Surgery Schedule for instruments needed on a daily basis and coordinate borrowing set(s) if needed. Know procedure for recall of instrument(s) or instrument set(s) from the OR. Serve as a resource person for the OR staff concerning instrument sets and sterilization techniques. Keep OR staff updated on instrument status (i.e., receiving from other OR, in the sterilizer, arriving by courier, etc.). Respond to emergency situations immediately (i.e., break in power, recalls, instruments needed for OR cases not scheduled).Department Duties: Train personnel in instrument duties, decontamination, checking and assembly of sets, wrapping and sterilization of sets. Update the OR schedule throughout the day.Record Keeping: Keep all records of sterilization, including Biologicals, DART tests and implant biologicals. Maintain a record of all instruments out for repair and when returned. Mark set(s) accordingly.Communication & Relationships: Maintain communication and cooperative relationship with internal and external customers, including: Community Surgery Center employees and Medical Staff, Community Hospitals Indianapolis departments, and Vendors and Manufacturers.Quality/Quality Improvement: Perform continual preventive maintenance care on all instruments.Individuals may not perform all of these duties, or may perform additional, related duties not listed here.Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities):Ability to adapt to a variety of situations, change, and new learningsDemonstrates an understanding and accountability for Community Health Network goals and objectives by consistent application and interpretation of approved policies and proceduresGeneral computer skills, knowledge of instrumentation tracking systems desirableMust have instrumentation/surgical experience to the equivalent of no less than 400 hoursAbility to communicate effectively both orally and in writingAbility to work under pressureExpected Behaviors:Works effectively with others consistently demonstrating tact, discretion and a commitment to team work.Functions appropriately under stressful or emergency conditions.Utilizes effective verbal, nonverbal and written communication.Assist with orientation of new associates.Contribute to planning, implementing and supporting change for improved patient care and departmental operations. Identify educational opportunities of growth.Demonstrate acceptable attendance and punctuality.Conduct self in a professional manner at all times.Mandatory License/Registration/Certification:CPREducation and Experience Requirements:High School graduate or GED required.CRCST/CSPDT/CFER within one year of hire or national certification or Certified Surgical Technologist obtained from NBSTSA required.Basic computer skills required2 years of knowledge and skills in Central Services preferred.Knowledge of surgical instruments, basic aseptic techniques, medical terminology and the healthcare environment.Surgical related experience involving care and maintenance of equipment.Mandatory Annual Continuing Education: Customer Service, Fire and Safety, Confidentiality-HIPAA, Infection Control, Corporate Compliance.
