Lead Engineering Technologist - Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Motors

Lead Engineering Technologist – Motor SME Lead Engineering Technologist to serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for motors. The Motor SME provides technical support for operations, maintenance, and project activities for motors across multiple geographic regions. Responsibilities Manage work in engineering areas of specialization with minimal supervision. Identify problems, develop solutions, and take action to resolve them. Develop and review specifications for new equipment, review test results, and support troubleshooting efforts. Develop and assess reliability strategies for motor assets across all regions. Produce technical documentation (standards, guidelines, procedures) in support of design, operations, and maintenance of motor assets. Engage with external service providers to provide guidance on repair and replacement activities and ensure standards are applied consistently. Qualifications Basic / Required Qualifications Associate Degree in Engineering Technology and 8 years of related work experience. High School Diploma / GED and 10 years of related work experience. Proficient in researching design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations. Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work independently with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Preferred Qualifications Experience in the utility industry. Leadership in technical project management, program oversight, and/or governance. Experience with motors, including analysis of online and offline electrical test results (e.g., insulation resistance, motor current signature analysis). Review of repair plans and activities. Knowledge of motor design and construction. Good written and oral communication skills. Experience working with a variety of individuals from diverse socio‑economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds. Working Conditions Hybrid – work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility. Routine travel within the home region is required (~5‑10%).
