Perinatal Education Coordinator
Leadership & Staff Development
- Recruits, selects, orients, and evaluates perinatal education staff to ensure high-quality instruction and adequate coverage.
- Provides coaching, counseling, and professional development opportunities aligned with individual and departmental goals.
- Conducts timely performance evaluations and monitors staff performance, taking corrective action as needed.
- Schedules and facilitates regular staff meetings to ensure effective communication and collaboration.
Program Management & Instruction
- Oversees the planning, development, and delivery of perinatal education classes, including class syllabi, materials, and instructor assignments.
- Maintains accountability for the Perinatal Education Curriculum and may instruct classes as needed.
- Coordinates the annual class schedule and ensures timely promotion and advertising of offerings.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams (e.g., physicians, nurses, lactation consultants) to develop and evaluate educational content.
Quality Improvement & Compliance
- Leads the implementation of evidence-based practices and quality improvement initiatives, including:
- Hypertension in Pregnancy (HTN)
- Optimizing Newborn Nutrition
- Cardiac Conditions in Obstetrical Care (CCOC)
- Ensures compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and current clinical guidelines.
- Develops and evaluates quality metrics for perinatal education programs.
Georgia Perinatal Quality Collaborative ( GaPQC) Initiative Implementation
- Implements GaPQC maternal and neonatal quality improvement (QI) initiatives.
- Collects and submits structure and process measure data (quarterly for maternal, monthly for neonatal).
- Participates in GaPQC coaching sessions, office hours, and collaborative learning events.
- Completes the GaPQC Planning, Implementation, and Sustainability Assessment.
- Submits presentations for GaPQC webinars or office hours.
Operational & Financial Oversight
- Monitors departmental resources, including staffing, supplies, and equipment, for cost-effectiveness.
- Prepares and analyzes departmental statistics, including class attendance, evaluations, and budget forecasts.
- Develops proposals for new or expanded programs with associated cost implications.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinates with community partners to enhance satisfaction and program reach.
- Ensures timely entry of class offerings into the Advocate Health Care Community Health Event Calendar.
Qualifications
Education (minimum education level and field of study)
- Associate degree in Nursing (ADN) or equivalent nursing credential required; must be sufficient to support and maintain active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
Certification / Registration / License (any certification, registration, license required to perform the job followed by the governing body)
- Current, active, and unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the state in which the individual will be executing duties, or a valid multistate license through the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
- Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE) required. If not currently certified, must obtain within six (6) months of hire in accordance with organizational policy.
- Current CPR certification required.
Work Experience (the minimum years and type of experience required for competent performance of the job)
- Minimum of three (3) years of Maternal/Child Nursing clinical experience required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of perinatal education teaching experience required.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities (Knowledge is considered a body of information necessary to perform a task, skills are a level of proficiency needed and abilities are capabilities necessary to perform the job)
- Knowledge of perinatal and maternal-child nursing practice standards, evidence-based educational methodologies, and applicable regulatory and accreditation requirements.
- Demonstrated leadership, team development, staff management, and performance evaluation skills.
- Effective communication, teaching, conflict resolution, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs aligned with clinical and organizational standards.
- Proficiency in organizational and administrative functions including scheduling, budgeting, reporting, and data management.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, exercise independent judgment, and function effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic clinical environment.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions (Typical physical demands and working conditions to perform the job)
Work is performed in a clinical and classroom environment requiring the ability to function effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic setting. The role requires frequent standing, walking, and movement throughout clinical and educational spaces, as well as the ability to bend, reach, squat, kneel, and transition between positions to support operational and instructional activities.
The individual must possess sufficient strength and mobility to assist with patient handling when providing direct clinical support, including repositioning, transfers, and movement of equipment or supplies, consistent with safe patient handling practices and organizational policy. For patient lifts exceeding 35 pounds, or when the patient is unable to assist, patient handling equipment is expected to be used with at least one other associate when available. Unique patient lifting and movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
The role requires adequate visual acuity, hearing, and manual dexterity to observe patients, operate equipment, and perform assigned responsibilities. The individual must be able to respond promptly to changes in patient or class conditions, manage competing priorities, and maintain composure in stressful or unplanned situations. Work may involve exposure to blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and high noise levels. Appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to infection prevention and safety protocols are required at all times.
Must be able to work days, evenings, and weekends as required to support class and program coverage. All duties must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation, consistent with applicable law and organizational policy.
This role includes direct and indirect clinical exposure. The individual may be present in active patient care areas and is expected to adhere to all infection prevention protocols, utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and follow organizational safety and clinical practice standards at all times. Potential exposures include blood, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, noxious substances, and high-acuity clinical situations consistent with a perinatal and maternal-child care environment.
