Custodian Substitute - On-call

Job Summary

Substitute Custodians are needed to fill for Custodial absences and other custodial needs. Jobs are notified by a computer program. Having computer skills is desired. We have AM and PM shifts. Must have a working email and phone with a voicemail set up for messages. Must be available at least 5 consecutive hours between 6:30am the 10:30pm. Read the Job Destription before applying.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, maintains an assigned school plant, group of buildings, classrooms or office space in a clean, orderly and secure manner, performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Coordinates school custodial needs directly with the site administrator. Inspects school plant to assure appropriate maintenance, safety and cleanliness; reports health and safety hazards to appropriate personnel; removes minor graffiti Performs security duties related to buildings and grounds, sets security alarm system; locks and unlocks doors and gages; raises and lowers flags. Sweeps, cleans, mops, strips, seals, and waxes floors, vacuums and clean carpets. Empties, cleans and disinfects waste receptacles; refills dispensers; cleans drinking fountains; cleans and replaces erasers; clean chalk rails; empties pencil sharpeners; cleans and disinfects equipment. Picks-up or sweeps paper and other debris from grounds and buildings. Cleans, scrubs, disinfects and maintains various classrooms, offices and facilities, including, but not limited to, restrooms; polishes various fixtures, cleans windows, walls, mirrors, doors and display writing boards. Adjusts and arranges furniture and equipment; sets-up various facilities and equipment for special events, meetings and other school activities. Replaces interior and exterior light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as needed. Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork. Orders and maintains custodial materials and supplies; receives and distributes supplies and materials as needed. Locates and operates all emergency shutoff valves, switches or controls for electric, gas and water in an emergency. Assists in performing minor repairs and adjustments to building fixtures and equipment; performs minor maintenance of custodial equipment. Performs related duties as directed.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge Of: Methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work. Interpersonal skills using patience and courtesy. Recordkeeping techniques. Requirements of maintaining school buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition. Health and safety regulations. Proper methods of storing equipment, materials and supplies. Effective reading, oral and writing communication skills.

Ability To: Plan and perform custodial work. Use the proper cleaning equipment and materials. Perform minor repairs to facilities and equipment. Lift and move objects weighing up to seventy-five (75) pounds. Meets schedules and timelines. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Effectively speak, read and write in English. Work cooperatively with others and independently with minimal directions as needed. Maintains records, logs and reports. Maintain custodial supplies and equipment. Performs heavy manual labor. Sweep, scrub, polish, strip and seal wax floors, dust, vacuum, empty waste receptacles and perform other cleaning duties. Learn school security system. Read, interpret and follow rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Write and print legibly. Climb and work from ladders.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience and Education: Minimum of high school diploma is desirable or equivalent, and One (1) year of experience or any combination equivalent to sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above.

Licenses and Other Requirements: Valid State of California Class "C" driver's license is desirable.

Working Conditions:

Working in a school site both in an indoor and outside environment. Subject to sitting, bending or stooping, lifting, climbing stairs, ladders, standing, and walking. Subject to exposure to sunlight and other outside conditions. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions, fumes from chemicals, machine vibration, noise, heat. Work involves heavy physical exertion.

Physical Abilities: Seeing to inspect documents and to read fine print; hearing and speaking to communicate with others in a normal voice in person and on telephone; speak clearly to communicate with parents, staff and others; sitting or standing alternately for extended periods of time; climbing stairs; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate tools and equipment; write legibly; bending and stooping; reaching overhead and above shoulders; lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects weighting up to seventy-five (75) pounds.
