Maintenance Worker

Summary You will serve as a Maintenance Worker with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Region 6 at Seedskadee National Wildlife Refuge in Green River, Wyoming. You will perform a wide range of construction, repair, and maintenance work on buildings, facilities, vehicles, heavy equipment, and refuge lands while using hand tools, power tools, specialized machinery, and various trade techniques to support daily operations and land management needs. Responsibilities Some of the major duties you will perform include but are not limited to the following: Perform building and facility maintenance by repairing electrical systems, heating and cooling units, plumbing, carpentry, roofing, masonry, painting, and welding using hand tools, power tools, testing devices, and trade equipment. Maintain and repair vehicles, heavy machinery, small engines, and equipment by replacing parts, troubleshooting mechanical issues, completing preventative service, and installing hardware or software components. Operate heavy equipment and motor vehicles such as bulldozers, excavators, loaders, tractors, trailers, and trucks to complete earth-moving, road and trail work, land management tasks, pesticide application, and equipment transport. Lead small projects by planning work steps, training others, promoting safe practices, maintaining equipment records, and entering maintenance information into approved computer systems. Support refuge operations by maintaining water control structures, performing habitat restoration, installing fences and signs, assisting with land management activities, and completing other related maintenance tasks as needed. Physical Demands: The employee uses considerable physical effort is required in the operation and maintenance of facilities, equipment, and attachments. The employee frequently is required to perform heavy lifting and exerts considerable physical effort while using hand and power tools. Work requires extensive leg, arm, and hand movement, standing, stooping, walking, bending, climbing, and kneeling, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and over 50 pounds with assistance. The employee uses jacks, pulleys, dollies, or other lifting and carrying devices. Work may be from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, or high places, and in hard-to-reach places. Frequent arm and leg movements are required to operate controls, make repairs, and build items. Working Conditions: Work is accomplished both in an office setting (5%) and outdoors (95%). Works outside in all kinds of weather and frequently exposed to running water, fumes, dust, grease, dirt, and moving parts of equipment and machinery. Work performed outside is in a variety of settings where steep terrain, extremely uneven, rocky and slippery footing is normal. Temperature extremes are common. Employee is regularly exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, and bruises, falls, falling material, or injury from equipment associated with power equipment or hazardous materials. Work demands conformance to safety requirements including the use of a variety of personal protective equipment such as: protective clothing, hardhats, hearing protection, safety glasses, goggles, gloves, steel toe heavy leather boots, respirator, and other personal protective items.Serious injury may result from getting caught in operating equipment, or from collisions with automobiles when operating on or near public roads.Work is generally done on stable flat terrain and construction sites, but may be also done on rolling hills, minor slopes, grades, rocky or soft ground, or forests.
