Substitute Nurse

The substitute nurse is responsible for the clinical well-being of students who may be non-verbal or medically dependent. The essential functions include providing direct nursing services to students as ordered by the medical care provider, implementing health care plans, participating in student's educational programming throughout the school day under direction of the case manager, ensuring medical equipment and supplies function appropriately, demonstrating cooperation, openness for growth and willingness to contribute to a team approach to the educational program, participating in general staff meetings, training programs, and in-service sessions as required, communicating effectively with case manager, school nurse, and family/guardian regarding health information as necessary, and documenting pertinent health information and facilitating accommodations as required to meet the medical needs of the student.

Other functions include performing other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the program, facilitating an office atmosphere of service, competence and congeniality, supporting NSSEO policy, NSSEO, and governing board goals and objectives, and The School Code of Illinois.

The working environment requires strength and/or endurance for lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling occasionally, and the upper extremity physical capabilities reaching, handling, and/or fine motor dexterity constantly. Exposure to hazardous conditions and frequency of exposure to injury to self and/or others is seldom or not present.

Minimum qualifications include a valid Illinois license as a registered nurse or licensed practical nurse, ability to travel within NSSEO and move about NSSEO and programs as necessary, current Adult and Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and AED certification, ability to read, write, and communicate in English to understand directions and communicate with students and staff, ability to physically move about the building, ability to lift and position students, ability to participate in NSSEO approved behavior management procedures, and apply training in crisis situations including physical management of students, computer literacy and competency in use of existing technology, and ability to make minor decisions with minimal supervision in accordance with established procedures.
