Position Summary

Raise the Future is seeking a strategic, visionary, and hands‑on Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to lead the organization’s financial strategy and help position the organization for long‑term sustainability and growth.

This is a critical leadership role at an important moment for Raise the Future. The CFO will be responsible not only for maintaining strong financial operations, but for helping the organization build a stronger financial future, including strengthening reserves, improving financial sustainability, diversifying revenue, and ensuring resources are aligned with the organization’s strategic priorities.

We are looking for a leader who can see beyond the immediate financial challenges and help the organization think several years ahead. The successful candidate will bring strong business and financial acumen, a strategic mindset, and the ability to translate complex financial information into clear decisions and action. They will be a trusted thought partner to the CEO, Senior Leadership Team, and Board and will help connect financial strategy to program growth, revenue generation, operational decisions, and long‑term organizational impact.

This role requires both vision and execution. The CFO must be comfortable operating at the highest strategic level while also being willing to roll up their sleeves and work alongside the Finance team to solve complex accounting problems, improve systems, strengthen processes, and ensure the organization has reliable financial information to make decisions.

The CFO will lead a Finance team and oversee a multi‑state nonprofit environment that includes federal and state government contracts, philanthropic revenue, grants, clinical/Medicaid services, multiple programs and funding streams, and significant compliance requirements. Experience with Sage Intacct is strongly preferred.

Salary Range: $130,000 to $180,000 annually. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, qualifications, and the geographic market of the candidate's work location. This role is eligible for medical, dental, and vision coverage, retirement benefits, and paid time off.

They will bring urgency to the work without becoming consumed by the urgent. They will strategically position Raise the Future to move from solving today’s financial challenges to building the financial strength and infrastructure needed to achieve its vision for years to come.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Financial Leadership

• Serve as a strategic thought partner to the CEO and Senior Leadership Team, helping translate Raise the Future’s strategic vision into long‑term financial strategies and priorities.

• Develop and maintain a multi‑year financial vision that looks beyond the current budget cycle and positions the organization for long‑term sustainability, growth, and impact.

• Lead strategies to strengthen the organization’s financial position, rebuild and grow reserves, improve operating sustainability, and create greater financial flexibility.

• Proactively identify financial risks, opportunities, and trends and bring forward solutions before issues become urgent.

• Develop sophisticated financial models, forecasts, and scenarios to help leadership understand the potential impact of program growth, new funding opportunities, contracts, staffing decisions, investments, and other strategic initiatives.

• Partner closely with program, development, and operations leaders to evaluate the financial sustainability and return on investment of existing and potential programs and partnerships.

• Help identify opportunities to diversify and grow revenue and ensure that financial strategy supports the organization’s long‑term growth goals.

• Lead annual budgeting and long‑range financial planning processes, ensuring budgets are connected to strategic priorities and organizational outcomes.

• Establish clear financial measures and dashboards that allow leadership to understand performance, anticipate challenges, and make timely decisions.

• Help move the organization from reactive financial problem‑solving toward proactive, forward‑looking financial management.

• Manage interdepartmental communication, workflow, budget‑build, and invoicing for over 70 public and private grant awards. Must have specialization in managing grants complex grants from various sources.

Financial Leadership & Team Development

• Lead, mentor, and develop the Finance team, creating a culture of accountability, collaboration, excellence, and continuous improvement.

• Assess Finance team structure, systems, and capabilities and make recommendations for strengthening the function as the organization grows.

• Provide clear direction and priorities for the Finance team while building the team’s capacity to operate effectively in a complex and evolving organization.

• Be a visible and collaborative member of the Senior Leadership Team and contribute to organization‑wide strategy and decision‑making.

• Build strong relationships across the organization and help leaders understand and use financial information effectively.

• Be willing to be hands‑on when needed, particularly in periods of transition, system improvement, financial planning, or complex problem‑solving.

• Current supervisory responsibilities include managing a team of four.

Financial Operations & Infrastructure

• Oversee proper functioning of financial team and processes.

• Oversight of grant budgeting and monitoring.

• Oversee grant and contract records; manage organization‑wide insurance policies and relationships; and partner with the COO and People & Culture on benefits, payroll, 401(k) administration, and payroll adjustments related to employee leave and other HR matters.

• Ensure accurate, timely, and meaningful financial reporting across the organization.

• Oversee cash management, investments, banking relationships, and short‑and long‑term cash flow planning.

• Strengthen internal financial controls, policies, and procedures in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.

• Lead the ongoing improvement, integration, and automation of financial processes and systems.

• Maximize the capabilities of the organization’s financial ERP system, and ensure financial information is accessible, accurate, and useful for decision‑making.

• Evaluate and improve the integration of financial information with other organizational systems, including the HRIS system and donor management system.

• Ensure financial systems and processes are scalable and capable of supporting future organizational growth.

• Oversee Medicaid and other clinical services billing processes, ensuring compliance and maximizing reimbursement efficiency.

• Oversee financial analysis related to business insurance contracts, vendor agreements, and other significant organizational commitments.

Forecasting, Performance & Accountability

• Maintain a dynamic forecasting process that allows leadership to understand current performance while anticipating future financial conditions.

• Create financial analyses and cost‑benefit models to support strategic decisions and long‑term planning.

• Regularly monitor actual results against budget and forecast and proactively identify variances, trends, and emerging concerns.

• Develop clear financial scenarios and recommendations for leadership when changes are needed.

• Establish a culture of financial accountability throughout the organization while ensuring financial information is understandable and actionable for non‑financial leaders.

• Ensure program and department leaders have the financial information and tools necessary to manage their budgets effectively.

Audit, Compliance & Risk Management

• Oversee annual audit preparation and manage relationships with external auditors.

• Oversee preparation of audited financial statements, Form 990, and other required regulatory filings.

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, government contracts, grant requirements, and applicable federal and state regulations.

• Ensure appropriate financial controls and processes are in place to protect organizational resources and manage risk.

• File all reports necessary to comply with laws and regulations related to public funding and other regulatory requirements.

• Identify and proactively manage financial and operational risks that could affect the organization’s sustainability.
• Strengthen internal financial controls, policies, and procedures in accordance with GAAP and applicable regulatory requirements.

Board & Stakeholder Engagement

• Serve as a key financial advisor to the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, and other Board committees as appropriate.

• Prepare and present clear, meaningful financial information that enables the Board to understand the organization’s financial position, risks, opportunities, and long‑term outlook.

• Partner closely with the CEO, Board Chair, Treasurer, and Finance Committee to ensure strong financial governance and accountability.
• Ensure financial reporting reflects both transparency and the organization’s broader strategic direction.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

This position primarily works in a typical office environment, mostly indoor office environment with windows, with office equipment noise and the possibility of interruptions with questions from staff or other office matters. This position also may be required to meet with grantors, donors, partners, vendors, and others in professional and social settings outside the office. Considerable time is spent sitting at a desk using a computer terminal, telephone, and attending meetings with others.
