Nurse Practitioner

Hampton University is seeking a Nurse Practitioner to provide in‑person and telehealth medical care to students at the Health Center. The role involves working collaboratively with the health team to deliver comprehensive, age‑appropriate care for well and ill patients. Scheduled hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM‑6:00 PM, with on‑call coverage for emergencies. Examples of Duties Provide outpatient primary‑care services for episodic illnesses, health maintenance, and wellness screenings. Perform examinations to evaluate health and diagnose illnesses. Develop appropriate care/treatment plans and adjust treatment as necessary. Consistently develop effective care/treatment plans for assigned patients according to established protocols and procedures. Order diagnostic tests such as X‑rays and laboratory tests. Document medical information of patients and maintain electronic medical records. Request consultation or referral with other health‑care providers, such as physicians and clinics. Prescribe medications as needed. Provide information to clinical staff regarding patient’s care plan and condition. Regularly confer and consult with an appropriate supervising physician as needed. Educate, instruct, and counsel patients on presenting health problems, treatment plans, and home care, and encourage preventative health care and positive health behaviors. Actively maintain knowledge of current medical research, trends, and evidence‑based best practices. Typical Qualifications Must have a current license to practice as a nurse practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Must be board certified by either the American Association of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Association. Must have current Basic Life Support CPR certification. Must maintain current licensure and certification during the duration of employment. Must have 2–4 years of clinical work experience. Ability to triage mental health issues and work closely with colleagues in the Student Counseling Center. Ability to multitask, triage health problems, and respond effectively to medical emergencies. Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills. Exceptional active listening skills. Must work on call after‑hours and weekends as needed.
