The Western Tidewater Health District is seeking a highly qualified Environmental Health Technical Specialist to join our team. The Western Tidewater Health District services the City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, and the City of Franklin. The District is part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), which is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.
The Environmental Health Technical Specialist position serves as the environmental health technical leader, mentor & subject matter expert for the Food Safety, Tourist Establishment and General Environmental Programs. The candidate will perform complex environmental health functions, provide consultation and training to EH staff, assist in conducting training and may provide formal input into performance evaluations of EH staff. They will manage a typical caseload of approximately 35 food establishments in addition to DSO duties. They will collaborate and assist the district supervisors and manager with technical and enforcement issues. The Virginia Department of Health offers 12 paid holidays, medical, dental, vision and life insurance, retirement plans (including 401a Cash Match and 457 Deferred Compensation Plan) as well as sick, family/personal, and annual leave. Minimum Qualifications
• Considerable knowledge of environmental health principles and practices related to the assigned program(s)
• Knowledge of microbiology and epidemiology as related to communicable disease
• Skill in evaluating the operation of assigned program area(s) and applying laws, regulations, and policies
• Skilled in proper use of instruments and equipment required for testing related to the assigned program area(s)
• Ability to interpret, apply, and enforce laws, regulations and policies governing environmental health
• Ability to explain and interpret detailed and complex rules and regulations
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
• Ability to train and mentor program staff
• Must be able to complete training within 24 months and obtain
the following certification: Certified Food Safety District Standardization Officer (DSO) Additional Considerations
• Graduation from college with a degree related to the duties of the position or experience related to the area of environmental health specialization
