Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN)

Job Summary

The Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive patient care in a hospital setting. This role involves conducting patient assessments, developing care plans, administering medication, and collaborating with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure high-quality and compassionate care for diverse patient populations.

Key Responsibilities

• Patient Assessment and Care Planning:
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' physical, emotional, and psychological health upon admission and throughout their stay.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Monitor patient progress and adjust care plans based on changing conditions or responses to treatment.
• Administering Medications and Treatments:
  • Accurately administer prescribed medications and treatments, including oral, intravenous (IV), and injectable medications.
  • Monitor patient responses to medications and report any adverse reactions or concerns to the healthcare team.
  • Perform wound care, dressing changes, and manage drains or tubes as required by patients' conditions.
• Patient Monitoring and Documentation:
  • Monitor vital signs and document all assessments, interventions, medications, treatments, and outcomes in accordance with hospital policies.
  • Identify and report any changes in patient status or complications ensuring timely interventions are provided.
• Collaboration with Healthcare Team:
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, specialists, and other healthcare professionals to deliver holistic patient care.
  • Participate in daily rounds and communicate effective updates on patient status to the medical team.
  • Educate patients and families on care plans, treatment options, and progress.
• Patient Education:
  • Provide education on managing conditions, understanding procedures, and preparing for discharge.
  • Offer guidance on post-hospital care, including lifestyle modifications and medication instructions.
• Managing Postoperative Care:
  • Monitor patients recovering from surgery, assessing for complications.
  • Provide post-operative care including pain management and wound care.
• Patient Safety and Infection Control:
  • Ensure patient safety by following infection control protocols and maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Adhere to hospital policies related to medication administration and patient confidentiality.
• Emergency and Crisis Management:
  • Recognize and respond to emergencies, providing immediate care for life-threatening conditions.
  • Perform CPR and other life-saving interventions when necessary.

Qualifications

• Education: Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid state nursing license.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years of medical-surgical experience required, with at least 1 year of travel experience preferred.
• Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong clinical knowledge and nursing skills, particularly in patient assessment, medication administration, and wound care.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for interacting with patients, families, and interdisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple patients and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to address patient concerns effectively.
  • Compassionate, patient-focused approach to nursing care.

Working Conditions

Medical-Surgical RNs work in hospital medical-surgical units, which may include both acute and subacute patient care settings. Shifts may include weekends and holidays. The role involves physical activities such as standing, walking, lifting, and assisting patients with mobility, with potential exposure to infectious diseases, requiring adherence to safety protocols.
