Cardiovascular Intensive Care Nurse (CVICU RN)

Job Description:

Seeking a dedicated Cardiovascular Intensive Care Nurse for a 10-bed unit specializing in post-operative care following open heart surgery. Recent experience in open heart recovery is mandatory, ensuring readiness to provide immediate post-operative care on the first day.

Position Overview:

The CVICU RN will deliver comprehensive care to hemodynamically stable or predictably unstable patients, offering physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural support as needed. Anticipated patient populations include, but are not limited to:

• Pediatrics
• Pre and post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) care
• Pacemaker management
• Revascularization and carotid endarterectomy
• Thoracotomy
• Congestive heart failure (CHF)
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Renal failure, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism (PE)
• Sepsis
• General surgical services

Staff should be prepared to manage patients in relative stability while recognizing that conditions may require skilled assessment and timely interventions. Responsibilities include operating advanced medical equipment such as central lines, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, continuous bladder irrigation, arterial lines, multiple IVs, and supporting patients with short-term ventilation as necessary. The RN will also care for general medical and surgical patients within the inpatient unit, ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures with minimal supervision. In this role, the nurse will act as a clinical leader, assist in precepting new staff, and facilitate patient care from admission through discharge, including discharge planning.

Organizational Relationships:

• Receives direction from: Providers, Charge Nurse, ICU Director, and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO)
• Provides direction to: LPNs, CNAs, housekeeping staff, and dietary staff
• Collaborates with: Providers, healthcare professionals, and allied health staff

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent and a degree from an accredited nursing program
• Experience: Recent critical care nursing experience is required

Knowledge and Skills:

• Advanced nursing principles and procedures
• Critical care, CVICU, and open heart experience preferred
• Proficient in the use of office equipment and multiple IV pumps
• Ability to operate advanced medical equipment, including arterial lines and invasive lines
• Experience with both non-invasive and invasive ventilatory support
• Basic cardiac telemetry and EKG interpretation skills

Licensure and Certifications Required:

• Current State of Montana RN Licensure
• BLS and ACLS certification
• PALS certification

Shift Information:

Night Shift required. Holiday coverage is not mandatory.

Experience Requirement:

A minimum of 2 years of relevant nursing experience is necessary.
