Risk Manager Position Summary Under the direction of the Director, Insurance, Safety & Risk Management, the Risk Manager performs a broad range of complex professional and leadership duties associated with the safe, secure, and compliant operation of the organization. The Risk Manager is responsible for the administration and oversight of workers' compensation, general liability, property claims, safety programs, security systems, investigations, loss prevention initiatives, and risk management programs. The position serves as a subject matter expert, provides day-to-day leadership to department staff, and acts on behalf of the Director during periods of absence. Supervision Received and Exercised Receives general direction from the Director, Insurance, Safety & Risk Management. May provide day-to-day leadership, guidance, training, work assignment coordination, and project oversight to Risk Management Specialists and other departmental staff. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Risk Management & Claims Administration Oversee the investigation and administration of workers' compensation, general liability, auto liability, employment practices, and property claims. Ensure compliance with all legal and procedural requirements associated with claims administration, including submission of required forms and documentation. Serve as liaison between injured workers, operations management, insurance carriers, third-party administrators, brokers, and legal counsel. Monitor claim activity, analyze loss trends, and recommend corrective actions to reduce exposure and claim costs. Track and manage all open and closed claims, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution. Investigations & Loss Prevention Lead investigations involving employee injuries, security incidents, property losses, workplace violence concerns, vehicle accidents, and other significant incidents reflecting risk to the organization. Conduct root cause analyses and develop corrective action recommendations. Partner with Operations, Human Resources, Legal, and Safety teams to resolve risk-related concerns. Prepare investigative reports and maintain confidential claim and investigation files. Safety & Regulatory Compliance Assist with the development, implementation, and monitoring of safety and loss prevention programs. Coordinate and support OSHA compliance activities, including Cal/OSHA 300 logs, recordkeeping, inspections, and regulatory responses. Conduct risk assessments and site visits to identify hazards and ensure compliance with company standards. Assist with safety training initiatives and educational programs designed to reduce injuries and losses. Security Systems Ownership Serve as the primary department owner and administrator for physical security systems, including: Video surveillance systems Burglar alarm systems Access control systems Panic alarms and emergency notification systems Associated software platforms and mobile applications Coordinate installation, maintenance, upgrades, and repairs with security vendors, contractors, and service providers. Manage vendor relationships, service agreements, invoices, and performance expectations. Work with Operations, IT, Facilities, and vendors to troubleshoot system issues and ensure timely resolution. Develop and maintain security system standards, procedures, and best practices. Analyze security incidents and identify opportunities for process or technology improvements. Provide training and support to field management regarding security system utilization. Leadership Responsibilities Provide day-to-day leadership and operational support for the Risk Management department. Assist with prioritization of workload, project assignments, and departmental initiatives. Mentor, coach, and support Risk Management Specialists and other team members. Ensure timely completion of department objectives and deliverables. Facilitate communication between field operations, executive leadership, and department personnel. Lead department meetings and represent the department in cross-functional meetings as needed. Acting Department Leadership In the absence of the Director, Insurance, Safety & Risk Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for risk management, safety, security, and insurance matters. Provide operational leadership and decision-making support for ongoing department activities. Coordinate communication with executive leadership, insurance carriers, brokers, legal counsel, and external partners. Ensure continuity of critical department functions, claim management activities, investigations, and regulatory compliance efforts. Escalate significant matters to appropriate executive leadership when necessary. Administrative Responsibilities Maintain confidential records and documentation. Prepare reports, presentations, metrics, and trend analyses for leadership review. Assist with budget planning and vendor management within assigned areas. Interpret and communicate company policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Support special projects and strategic initiatives as assigned. Knowledge Of Workers' compensation claims administration, regulations, and best practices. General liability, property, and casualty insurance principles. OSHA and Cal/OSHA regulations and recordkeeping requirements. Incident investigation and root cause analysis methodologies. Physical security systems, surveillance technology, alarms, and access control systems. Risk management principles and loss prevention strategies. Microsoft Office Suite and risk management software applications. Ability To Lead initiatives and coordinate activities across multiple departments. Analyze data, identify trends, and recommend solutions. Exercise sound judgment and decision-making skills. Manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Communicate effectively with employees, management, executives, vendors, insurance carriers, and legal counsel. Establish and maintain productive working relationships at all organizational levels. Work independently and exercise discretion in handling confidential information. Travel as necessary to conduct risk assessments, investigations, inspections, and training activities. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Occupational Safety, Criminal Justice, Insurance, or a related field preferred. Equivalent combinations of substantial relevant work experience and education may be considered in lieu of the preferred degree. Three to five years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, claims administration, safety, insurance, security, or a related field. Experience conducting workplace incident investigations. Experience managing vendor relationships and security systems preferred.
