4-H Camp Overlook Junior Camp Counselor - Mountain View, NY

This position will serve as a Junior Camp Counselor for 4-H Camp Overlook, an overnight summer camp owned and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Associations of Franklin and St. Lawrence County, located in Mountain View, New York. The primary responsibilities of this position include assisting with weekly program design and implementation of all 4-H Camp Overlook programs and activities, and assisting in the overall supervision of youth participating in camp activities. This position performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned and deemed appropriate by the 4-H Camp Overlook Director. (NOTE: This position includes overnight cabin responsibilities.) Position Details Full‑time exempt, Sunday through Friday. Pay: $190–$340 per week, commensurate with experience. Overnight cabin duties are required. Required Qualifications Minimum age 17 years. Knowledge or skill in camp program areas such as arts & crafts, high adventure, nature, outdoor learning, shooting sports, teamwork & sports recreation, and waterfront. Current certification or willingness to obtain required training (e.g., NYS 4‑H Shooting Sports). Ability to relate positively with youth and adults. Willingness to learn developmental needs of youth of all ages. Dedication to living at 4‑H Camp Overlook during the camp session. Flexible work hours, including evenings and weekends. Preferred Qualifications Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certifications. Desire and ability to work with youth indoors and outdoors. Demonstrated ability to relate to one’s peer group. Demonstrated ability to accept guidance and supervision. Good character, integrity, and adaptability. Participation in a Counselor in Training program at 4‑H Camp or other youth camp. Experience working with youth of all ages. Responsibilities Assist in direction, supervision, and organization of campers in cabins, activities, and throughout camp. Apply youth development principles and respect for diversity. Ensure proper supervision during meals, free time, classes, transitions, and all‑camp activities. Implement safety guidelines and daily schedule. Participate in development and implementation of program activities. Assist senior counselors and program coordinators in lesson plan development. Assist with teaching non‑specialty activities such as arts & crafts; never solely responsible for high‑risk activities. Actively participate in assigned program areas and contribute to overall activity planning. Maintain health and safety standards; provide daily care of campers, administer medications, respond to health concerns, and monitor equipment. Model positive attitude and behavior; represent the camp to parents and campers, uphold safety rules, and demonstrate sportsmanship. Support daily upkeep of camp facilities, communicate updates, evaluate each season, and perform duties assigned by the Camp Director. Professional Improvement and Other Duties (5%) Attend orientation/training program, staff meetings, and required training events. Cooperate with Supervisor and/or Executive Director to develop and pursue a professional development plan. Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension, including staff meetings, expense reporting, marketing of Extension programs, and other duties as assigned. Health and Safety Support the association in maintaining a safe working environment. Follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, health and safety policy, and procedure.
