Eligibility Worker

Job Duties

The Eligibility Worker is responsible for conducting thorough interviews, assessing client needs, and determining eligibility for a wide range of public assistance programs, including emergency assistance, cash, food, child care, health care, and county burial services. The role requires evaluating client circumstances through face‑to‑face or phone interviews, explaining program regulations, and ensuring applicants understand data privacy rights and responsibilities. Eligibility Workers respond to public inquiries, examine applications, and guide clients toward the most beneficial program options. They monitor ongoing cases for changes affecting income, assets, or household composition, complete required redeterminations, and maintain familiarity with county, state, and federal regulations. The position involves making referrals for additional services, assisting clients in resolving issues that affect their eligibility, and initiating fraud referrals when necessary, including compiling evidence and testifying in court. Workers establish overpayments and implement repayment procedures, manage case transfers between counties to avoid interruptions in assistance, troubleshoot computer system issues, prepare appeal documentation, and represent the agency in appeal hearings. They participate in training, interpret updated policies and manuals, collaborate with coworkers and community partners, and ensure high‑quality work through peer review. Additional responsibilities include public speaking for community education, coordinating with other agencies and service providers, and maintaining professionalism while working with clients from diverse backgrounds, including those experiencing emotional distress or crises.

Minimum Education Required

The minimum education required for the Eligibility Worker position is a high school diploma, along with two years of additional advanced education and four years of previous work experience in a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential job functions.
