Medical Director, Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Portland VA Medical Center | Academic Appointment at Oregon Health & Science University The Division of Cardiology at the Portland VA Medical Center is seeking a talented early or mid-career cardiologist with fellowship training in advanced cardiovascular imaging (CT/CMR/Nuclear Cardiology) to lead and grow our imaging program. This role is designed for a rising academic cardiologist ready to step into program leadership. This is a unique opportunity to shape a growing imaging program, within a collaborative VA–university partnership, while caring for a highly appreciative veteran population. Why This Role Early career faculty will receive mentorship from the Chief of Cardiology and senior imaging faculty (OHSU) as you take ownership of program direction, while building your own academic and clinical identity. You will: Direct and help shape the advanced cardiovascular imaging program (CMR, cardiac CT, nuclear cardiology) Receive structured mentorship from senior faculty during your first years in the role Hold an academic appointment at OHSU Teach and mentor cardiology fellows and residents from OHSU Participate in research, quality improvement, and health systems innovation Join a collegial, mission-driven faculty group with strong interdisciplinary collaboration Other Clinical Responsibilities Outpatient continuity cardiology clinics Inpatient cardiology consult service Coronary care unit (CCU) attending service Interpretation of EKGs and cardiac stress testing Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography Electrical cardioversion Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging Leadership As Director, you will help grow and shape: Nuclear Cardiology imaging (with radiology): PET myocardial perfusion (sarcoid, CA, viability study) Cardiac MRI program: brand new 1.5 T Siemens scanner Cardiac CT services: CCTA, LAA occlusion, TAVR etc. Imaging curriculum and fellow education Candidates with imaging expertise and genuine interest in program-building are strongly encouraged to apply — prior formal leadership experience is not required. Protected time for research, education and program development will be available, commensurate with experience and academic interests. Academic Mission & Teaching Teaching is a core mission of the cardiology division. Faculty work closely with medical students, internal medicine residents, and cardiology fellows from Oregon Health & Science University in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with opportunities to: Lead bedside and clinical teaching Mentor fellows and residents Develop imaging-focused didactic content and curricula Pursue a clinician-educator or clinician-researcher academic track, with senior faculty guidance Research, Quality & Leadership Opportunities Clinical and outcomes research Quality improvement and patient safety initiatives Academic scholarship and publications Growing leadership responsibility within the cardiovascular service line as you establish yourself Qualifications Qualified candidates should: Be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Cardiovascular Disease Have completed an accredited cardiology fellowship Additional training or strong interest in advanced cardiovascular imaging (echo, CMR, and/or cardiac CT) Be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure Echocardiography certification or eligibility strongly preferred Early-career candidates encouraged to apply — this role includes structured mentorship for those new to program leadership Life in Portland Portland offers an exceptional quality of life with access to world-class outdoor recreation, vibrant food and arts communities, excellent schools, and the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirementsper VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
