Medical Director (HIV/STI & LGBTQ+ Health Services)

Reporting Relationship: Director of Healthcare Operations Status: Part Time, Exempt (.2 FTE) Summary/Objective The Medical Director provides clinical leadership and oversight for The Project of the Quad Cities’ HIV, STI, and LGBTQ+ health services. This role, requiring approximately 8 hours per week, ensures that clinical protocols are current, evidence-based, and compliant with regulatory standards. The Medical Director serves as the prescribing physician for treatment and preventive services, oversees clinical staff proficiency, and supports quality improvement initiatives. This flexible, primarily remote position offers the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to community health while maintaining an adaptable schedule. Essential Functions Clinical Oversight Provide leadership for all clinical programming related to HIV/STI testing, treatment, and LGBTQ+ health services. Maintain and update clinical protocols, standing orders, and treatment guidelines to reflect current CDC, HRSA, Illinois Department of Public Health, or other applicable best practice standards. Ensure compliance with state, federal, and CLIA regulations governing testing and treatment services. Monitor clinical staff proficiency and provide guidance to ensure safe, effective, and affirming care. Prescribing & Consultation Serve as the prescribing physician for STI treatment, PrEP, Doxy PrEP, and PEP under standing orders. Provide availability for consultation on complex medical cases via secure communication or telehealth. Collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to optimize patient care plans and address escalated concerns. Quality Assurance & Risk Management Support the organization’s quality improvement plan, including patient safety initiatives and outcome monitoring. Conduct or assist with periodic chart reviews, audits, and incident reviews as needed. Advise on risk management strategies, malpractice considerations, and compliance with regulatory requirements. Collaboration & Representation Partner with community stakeholders, public health agencies, and other medical professionals to strengthen TPQC’s clinical impact. Provide medical expertise for interdisciplinary collaboration across clinical and non-clinical teams. Represent TPQC in selected medical, academic, and community forums as appropriate. Education & Training Develop and deliver clinical training sessions for staff on sexual health, HIV/STI treatment, and LGBTQ+ affirming care. Provide continuing guidance on cultural humility, trauma-informed approaches, and inclusive care practices. Ensure staff are informed of clinical updates and best practices within relevant fields. Supervisory Responsibility None. Requirements Physical Demands The role will require the employee to speak and hear on a regular basis. Position Type/Expected Hours of Work This is a primarily remote position requiring reliable access to email, EHR, and telehealth platforms. Intermittent on-site presence in the Quad Cities is expected for chart review, protocol updates, and staff engagement. Standard hours of operation are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., though some flexibility (occasional evenings/weekends) may be necessary. No overnight travel is expected for this position Preferred Education and Experience Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO.) Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in HIV care, infectious disease, sexual health, or primary care with demonstrated expertise in STI prevention and treatment. Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills. Commitment to inclusivity, patient-centered care, and cultural competency. Licensure/Certification Requirements Active, unrestricted medical license in Illinois (dual licensure in Iowa or eligibility preferred). Valid DEA license.
