Job TitleResponsible performing work involving a variety of public works and related tasks. Responsible for street maintenance, right-of-way maintenance; maintenance and construction of storm sewer and cemeteries; and miscellaneous construction work. Work involves the use of a variety of tools and light and medium equipment. Operates medium equipment and drives dump trucksEssential Functions and ResponsibilitiesNOTE: This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as negotiated to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.Works on a crew to patch potholes and re-surface streets; assists with construction and repair of sidewalks, curb and gutter, and driveway aprons; constructs and cleans out storm sewer; digs drainage ditches.Performs a variety of maintenance tasks such as operating mowers for cutting grass in rights-of-way, cemeteries, or public grounds, using power hand equipment; removing leaves and debris; trimming shrubbery, and clearing and landscaping ground.Performs a variety of semi-skilled tasks in maintaining and repairing streets, drainage systems, sidewalks, and driveways; erects street signs.Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in building cleaning, maintenance and repair. Assists in the more complex repair jobs.Operates construction equipment including trucks, dump trucks, rollers, tractors, loaders, and other medium and light equipment.Performs general maintenance on municipal facilities and equipment.Perform other duties as assigned.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesWorking knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in semi-skilled trades work.Working knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in asphalt and concrete construction.Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.Working knowledge of basic carpentry and masonry.Ability to work cooperatively as a team member and respond courteously to citizens.Ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions.May serve as a team leader.Required Education and/or ExperienceHigh school diploma or general education degree (GED); and six months related experience.Special RequirementValid N.C. driver's license and acceptable driving record.Physical RequirementsMust be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly. Must be able to perform the basic life functions of stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions. Vocal communication required for expressing or exchanging ideas. Hearing is required to listen and comprehend the spoken word from others. Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as loaders and dump truck in a safe manner.Working ConditionsThe employees are subject to hazards associated with public works including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils.
