Certified Multi-Site Senior Medical Assistant - Specialty Care (Clear Lake)

At Houston Methodist, the Multi‑Site Senior Medical Assistant (Multi‑Site Sr. MA) position is responsible for working at multiple sites across several specialties and service lines. The Sr. MA provides high‑quality support of patient care and services, functions as an expert in advanced examinations and treatments, and communicates appropriately while carrying out delegated medical‑assistant level tasks under the direct supervision of a physician, APP, and/or registered nurse. This role oversees scope of practice, performs patient check‑in/out functions, schedules appointments, ensures medical necessity compliance, verifies eligibility for care, supports accurate claims submission, and may perform registration and other revenue‑cycle functions. In addition, the Sr. MA assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, dressing changes, and general administrative duties in accordance with CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA, and government standards. FLSA Status Non‑exempt Qualifications Education High school diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post‑secondary education, etc.). Experience Five years of medical‑assistant experience with highly complex, chronic disease management or in a specialty discipline, including patient services representative experience. Licenses and Certifications Certified Medical Assistant through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA, or Registered Medical Assistant or EMT mandatory. BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association mandatory. CPT – Certified Phlebotomy Technician (ACA) preferred. Skills and Abilities Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, assessed through ongoing competency assessments and performance evaluations. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions. Effective communication with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers with a customer‑service focus. Knowledge of medical practice and patient care; ability to assist with examinations, diagnostic and treatment procedures, and medical equipment. Skill in developing and maintaining clinical quality assurance to maintain accurate medical records. Learning attitude toward solving problems, using sound reasoning and judgment. Provide safe, patient‑centered, compassionate, and competent care. Proficient in computer skills for documentation and work‑related purposes; ability to use software systems such as the electronic medical record. Completes required continuous training and education, including department‑specific requirements, and maintains current certifications. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, co‑workers, and the public; strong customer service, phone, and scheduling skills. Works effectively with peers in a team situation. Understands the patient population as it relates to clinical disease processes. Demonstrates advanced assessment competencies appropriate for level of practice. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Role models and promotes a positive work environment, actively assisting the interprofessional care team to achieve optimal department results. Facilitates teamwork by anticipating the need for assistance and responding positively to requests for assistance. Collaborates with all members of the interprofessional health care team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient care information and data. Provides structured feedback with examples and serves as a clinical resource in the department. Performs patient check‑in/out functions and obtains accurate scheduling and registration data to initiate financial clearance activities. Coordinates patient flow consistently and timely, handling add‑ons, reschedules, and cancellations per department protocol. Service Essential Functions Provides care to patients under the direct supervision of a physician, registered nurse, or clinic leadership procedures. Completes pre‑visit planning workflow, including necessary documentation and collaboration with the provider team. Communicates with patients, obtains vital signs, reviews medication lists, and documents information in the electronic medical record. Follows up with patients to ensure compliance with recommendations, lab results, and referrals. Coordinates care with hospital, ED, consulting physicians, and community resources. Models behaviors and skills to improve department patient satisfaction scores. Uses excellent communication skills to facilitate the highest quality service during every encounter. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Reports observations, conditions, and problems to the physician and/or nurse. Accurately performs routine tests such as EKG, rapid strep, urinalysis, and urine pregnancy tests. Sterilizes instruments and equipment; prepares, cleans, and maintains exam and treatment rooms. Serves as a liaison for patients, medical staff, and third parties to resolve access and quality service matters. Enter patient and operational data into databases with thoroughness, accuracy, and timeliness. Finance Essential Functions Responsible for stocking exam rooms, taking inventory, and ordering supplies. Manages time effectively, prioritizing tasks to meet departmental demands. Accurately records charge entry, registration, scheduling, insurance verification, and authorization to meet financial objectives. Educates patients on billing processes and potential financial responsibilities. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Develops skills of team members and assists with improving performance and outcomes. Participates in professional development and department‑based educational activities. Provides innovative solutions through performance improvement activities. Updates the individual development plan regularly. Recommends initiatives to streamline processes and improve patient flow and quality. Seeks opportunities to expand learning beyond baseline competencies.
