As a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), you play a vital role in delivering high-quality psychiatric care, supporting client stability, and guiding treatment outcomes across the continuum of care.This role goes beyond medication management — it’s about clinical leadership, collaboration, and delivering compassionate, evidence-based care in a residential setting.What You’ll DoPsychiatric Evaluation & TreatmentConduct comprehensive psychiatric evaluations and assessmentsDiagnose mental health conditions and develop individualized treatment plansPrescribe and manage medications, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT)Client Care & Intake OversightComplete new client intakes upon admissionMonitor client progress and adjust treatment plans as neededEnsure continuity of care throughout the treatment processCollaboration & Care CoordinationPartner with psychiatrists, therapists, nurses, and residential staffParticipate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetingsCommunicate effectively with families, providers, and external partnersDocumentation & ComplianceMaintain accurate, timely clinical documentation in EMR systemsEnsure compliance with DHCS, DSS, Joint Commission, HIPAA, and applicable regulationsOn-Call Clinical SupportProvide remote support for clinical emergencies between 5:00 PM – 10:00 PMRespond to urgent medication requests and clinical concerns as neededWhat We’re Looking ForCompassionate, confident, and client-centered clinicianStrong clinical judgment in diagnosing and treating complex psychiatric conditionsSkilled in psychopharmacology and medication managementComfortable working both independently and collaborativelyOrganized, adaptable, and responsive in a dynamic clinical environmentCommitted to ethical, evidence-based, and high-quality carePreferred QualificationsExperience in residential treatment or higher levels of careExperience treating co-occurring mental health and substance use disordersFamiliarity with EMR systemsExperience working within multidisciplinary teamsMinimum QualificationsCurrent, unrestricted Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) license in CaliforniaActive DEA certificationStrong knowledge of adult psychiatric disorders and psychopharmacologyFamiliarity with ASAM criteria and behavioral health best practicesRequirementsValid California Driver’s License requiredCPR & First Aid certification required (or ability to obtain prior to start)Must pass Live Scan fingerprint clearanceMust be legally authorized to work in the United StatesPhysical RequirementsFrequent standing, walking, and movement between facilitiesAbility to navigate multi-level residential homes, including stairsAbility to respond to urgent clinical situations as neededAbility to operate computers and documentation systemsComplianceEmployment is contingent upon:Successful Live Scan clearanceCompletion of required health screenings, drug testing, and TB testingCompliance with DHCS, DSS, Joint Commission standards, HIPAA, and applicable California employment lawsAt Alter Behavioral Health, you are not “just a provider.” You are a clinical leader shaping outcomes, supporting recovery, and delivering life-changing care.DISCLAIMER – This posting provides a general overview of the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner role at Alter Behavioral Health.
