RN Psychiatric Emergency Room

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Psychiatric Emergency Room (Psych ER) is responsible for conducting intake assessments, planning and providing nursing care, and administering medications to psychiatric emergency patients. This role involves collaborating with psychiatrists and behavioral health staff to develop treatment plans, maintaining a safe environment, monitoring patient status, and performing necessary administrative duties. The nurse must ensure confidentiality and provide high-quality, compassionate care in a fast-paced emergency setting. Responsibilities:

• Conduct intake assessments through interviews with patients and relatives to gather case history.
• Plan and provide nursing care for psychiatric emergency room patients.
• Make nursing diagnoses of medical and emotional status and recommend treatment options.
• Consult with psychiatrists and behavioral health staff to design treatment plans.
• Administer psychotropic drugs and other medications; monitor and document patient reactions.
• Arrange for further medical attention as needed.
• Assist clients in understanding emotional disturbances and the need for treatment.
• Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff and patients.
• Monitor vital signs, assess and ensure treatment of pain.
• Document patient information, treatments, and follow physician orders in medical charts.
• Maintain patient confidentiality and accurate records including treatment, immunizations, and labs.
• Perform administrative tasks such as filing, answering phones, typing, and progress notes in computer systems.
• Provide high-quality, courteous service to patients and the public.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State.
• BLS Certification (American Heart Association).
• Minimum of 2 years RN experience, preferably in psychiatric or emergency room settings.
• Strong clinical assessment and medication administration skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience with telemetry monitoring (preferred but not required).

Special Considerations:

• Must maintain a safe and secure environment for patients and staff.
• Role requires strong collaboration with interdisciplinary behavioral health teams.
• Confidentiality and accurate documentation are critical.

Scheduling:

• Work 48 hours per week on rotating Day, Evening, and Night shifts.
• Includes holidays, on-call, callback, and charge nurse responsibilities as needed.
• No telemetry duties required during shifts.
