Description


The Court Security Officer provides armed security for Beaufort County courthouses and court
personnel, and performs related work as assigned. This officer follows guidelines established by
the Beaufort County Sheriffs Office, as well as South Carolina Court Administration concerning
courtroom security and is under the direct supervision of the Special Operations Branch
Courthouse Staff Sergeant. Must perform general law enforcement duties.

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provide armed security in Beaufort Coimty courthouses and courtrooms.
2. Maintain strict security at court entrances through the use of electronic detection devices.
3. Ensure the safety of court personnel and the general public.
4. Maintain order and silence in courtroom waiting areas.
5. Ensure strict security in courtroom prisoner detention areas.
6. Carry out orders and directions provided by the court and perform all duties in compliance
with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations and standards of safety.
7. Transport prisoners to and from court in some limited situations, under direction from
supervisory personnel.
8. Serve civil process papers in the courtroom as directed.
9. Prepare and submit incident reports, activity reports, court return papers, various logs, etc.
as may be applicable to duties.
10. Operate a police vehicle, firearms, restraining devices, surveillance equipment, metal
detector, x-ray machine, cameras, etc. and basic equipment.
11. Attend training, meetings, etc. to enhance job knowledge, skills and maintain required
certifications.
12. Perform other duties related to this position as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Typical Qualifications

Minimum Training and Qualifications
The Court Security Officer (Class III Advanced) must have the ability to read and analyze technical
procedures, or governmental regulations. Must have ability to write reports, business correspondence, and effectively present information and respond to inquiries; to solve practical problems and deal a diverse population with diverse problems. Must have general computer skills. At the time of appointment, must be a registered voter in Beaufort County. Must maintain all training and certification standards as established by the Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. Must possess or obtain within one year of hire a South Carolina Class III Advanced certification and have a valid South Carolina driver's license at the time of appointment. Must be fluent in the oral and written communication of the English language.

Minimum Qualifications Required to the Perform Essential Functions of the Position
Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate equipment such as firearms,
automobile, office equipment, radio, telephone, etc. and meet all of the physical fitness
requirements established by the Sheriff's Office.

Language Ability: Requires the ability to read and comprehend a variety of books, maps,
policies and procedures, equipment manuals, training manuals, etc. and to prepare detailed
reports and correspondence using correct punctuation, spelling and grammar.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principals of logical thinking to define problems,
collect data, established facts and draw valid conclusions; to make independent judgments in the
absence of supervision; and to acquire knowledge of topics related to primary occupation.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information. Ability to communicate
effectively and efficiently with diversified persons of varying educational backgrounds.

Interpersonal Personality: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving
instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress or when confronted with emergencies
or other critical situations.

Quality of Work: Maintains an acceptable standard of accuracy in exercising duties and
responsibilities. Ability to take immediate corrective action for any deficiencies that may occur.
Maintain a high quality of communication and interaction with internal and external entities.

Dependability: Assumes responsibility for completing all work. Complete all assigned work within
deadlines in accordance with agency directives, policy, standards and procedures.

Attendance: Attends and remains at work regularly and adheres to policies and procedures regarding
absenteeism and tardiness.

Initiative and Enthusiasm: Maintains an enthusiastic, self-reliant and self starting approach in
meeting all responsibilities. Strives to anticipate all work assignments and initiates proper and
acceptable action for the completion of work with a minimum of supervision.

Judgment: Exercises logical judgment in all areas of responsibility.

Knowledge of Job: Must have a working knowledge of the organization and law enforcement methods,
organization, and planning. Ability to maintain control of assigned activities and to work under
stressful or dangerous conditions. Have the ability to show a high level of discretion and
flexibility in daily operations. Has or obtains knowledge of the structure, functions, and
inter-relationships of state and local law enforcement agencies. Has the ability to analyze crime
and community trends and plan and adjust services to respond to changing trends. Has or obtains
knowledge of contemporary law enforcement operations and standards.

All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment.
