Precision Manual Machining Specialist (Lathe, Mill & Drill)

Job Description

Express Employment Professionals is partnering with a trusted local client in Plaquemine to add a skilled manual machinist to their air‑conditioned shop. This is a full-time, long-term, evaluation-to-hire opportunity.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m.
Starting Pay: $25–$35 per hour DOE

A day in the shop

You start your day reviewing work orders and confirming material, tools, and tolerances. With blueprints in hand, you set up fixtures and cutting tools on a manual lathe or Bridgeport, dial in your speeds and feeds, and take your first cut. Throughout the day, you alternate between turning, facing, boring, drilling, threading, tapping, and milling, checking each feature with micrometers, calipers, indicators, bore and depth gauges to ensure tight tolerances and proper finishes. You document results, collaborate with fellow machinists and engineering, and leave the area clean, machines maintained, and jobs on schedule.

What you’ll do

Set up and run manual lathes, vertical mills, drill presses , and related shop equipment to manufacture and repair precision components.
Interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches, specs, and work instructions .
Perform turning, facing, boring, drilling, threading, tapping, and milling operations to close tolerances with required surface finishes.
Calculate dimensions; select appropriate speeds, feeds, tooling, fixturing, and setups.
Verify dimensions using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, bore gauges, and depth gauges .
Inspect completed work and document results per quality requirements.
Set up tooling, fixtures, workholding, and cutting tools for each job; perform rework/repair as needed.
Identify worn or out‑of‑spec parts and determine appropriate machining or repair methods.
Keep machines, tooling, and the work area clean; perform routine maintenance and report issues.
Follow established quality, safety, and manufacturing procedures and partner with machinists, technicians, inspectors, engineering, and shop leadership to meet deadlines.
