CDOC Part Time Registered Nurse (Nurse I)

Overview This is a part-time position located in Buena Vista, CO. Applicants may be residents or non-residents of Colorado. A residency waiver has been granted for this announcement. Benefits Distinctive career advancement opportunities throughout the state system Strong, secure, yet flexible retirement benefits including PERA Defined Benefit Plan or PERA Defined Contribution Plan plus 401K and 457 plans Medical and Dental Health Plans Paid life insurance Short‑ and long‑term disability coverage 11 paid holidays per year plus vacation and sick time Employee wellness programs Tuition reimbursement Training opportunities and more Responsibilities Document in a timely manner to maintain comprehensive inmate medical records Provide standardized patient education within established nursing guidelines Transcribe medical orders and reports at shift changes Preserve confidentiality Administer medications and provide physical care and treatments; collaborate on treatment plans, employ infection control measures, and provide crisis intervention, interview, triage inmates, and perform instruction Assist physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners with minor medical and surgical procedures Order and restock medications and supplies Participate in restraining an inmate for medical reasons when required Deliver PO, IM, IV, SQ, SL medications to inmates in medication lines, infirmaries, specialized cell houses, and PRN Observe and report inmates' physical and emotional condition, including medication effectiveness during triage, sick line, and emergency situations Perform physical and emotional assessments during triage and emergency situations employing basic nursing assessment skills and protocol Promote safety and security of the clinical environment through conscientious observations and contraband control, including counting syringes, needles, narcotics, instruments, and key control Operate clinical equipment available in the assigned work unit Apply Life Safety policies and procedures applicable to the assigned work unit Report violations of security or safety through the reporting process Attend training programs as assigned, including 2‑day self‑defense training Work any shift, including weekends and holidays Minimum Qualifications Current, valid Registered Nurse license from the Colorado Board of Nursing or a state participating in the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) Required Competencies Ability to effectively treat inmate patients daily in various settings Follow patient‑confidentiality standards Respond to emergency situations involving inmates and/or medical situations Exhibit excellent interpersonal and communication skills Read and comprehend English; communicate fluently in English both verbally and in writing Demonstrate discernment and decision‑making skills Follow instructions and pay attention to detail Work a variety of shifts on a full‑time basis Create accessible documents and technical content that follows plain language guidelines and accessibility principles Maintain self‑control, resilience, and remain alert under stressful situations Tolerate stress, confinement, and high‑stakes interaction Preferred Qualifications Correctional nursing experience Charge nurse or supervisory experience Acute care or long‑term nursing experience Physical and Other Conditions of Employment Must be 21 years of age or older Possess a valid driver’s license (non‑restricted Colorado driver license, maintained within 30 days of employment, and meet specified driving record criteria) Possess a high school diploma or GED No felony convictions; comply with Colorado DOJ sexual offender and other statutory requirements Valid U.S. work authorization at the time of application; no H‑1B sponsorship available Complete all modules of the six‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including defensive tactics and written/practical exams Pass required physical fitness tests: lift arms overhead, controlled takedowns, striking techniques, baton use, agility, and stair climbing Be able to see and hear appropriately to observe, address, and respond to safety and security breaches Work various shifts, including rotating schedules, nights, and graveyards Undergo tuberculosis screening upon hire Background Investigation Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Criminal charges, if any, must be fully disclosed and the Department will provide official dispositions. Drug Testing All new employees must pass a drug test.
