Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.
Duties
The neurologist is expected to perform all services required in the practice of Neurology within the context of the VA system and his/her clinical privileges; and provide appropriate documentation in the medical record.
- See patients in the outpatient general neurology consult and follow‑up clinics, both in‑person and virtual.
- See inpatient neurology consults.
- Take calls from the ED as needed.
- Be responsible for oversight of all aspects of neurologic care delivered to assigned patients.
- Perform neurologic procedures such as NCS/EMG, EEG interpretation and/or botulinum toxin injections commensurate with training and expertise, in accordance with local VA credentialing and privileging requirements.
- Supervise and teach neurology residents and other learners, with potential for a leadership position in the residency program.
This position carries the possibility of a joint faculty appointment at the University of New Mexico. Applicants must have the appropriate credentials for a faculty appointment at the Assistant Professor level or higher at the University of New Mexico Health Science Center.

- Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
- Subject to background/security investigation.
- Must complete an online onboarding process, including acceptable identification, pre‑employment physical examination, and participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program.
- Must pass a pre‑employment physical examination.
- Applications may require completion of a probationary period.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed.
- United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).
- Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine, obtained from an accredited school as approved in that year.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
- Residency training: physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification. VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.
- Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs completed for the year, one year of post‑medical school training followed by two years of independent practice, or non‑US residency training followed by at least three years of verified independent practice in the United States.
- Residents currently enrolled in accredited residency programs who would otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) on an intermittent basis.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Preferred Experience
- Board certification as a neurologist.
- Completion of a fellowship in a Neurology sub‑specialty following completion of residency.
Physical Requirements
Eligible applicants must be physically and mentally able to perform efficiently the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation, without hazard to themselves or others. Pay and Benefits
- Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases.
- Paid Time Off: 50‑55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and up to 5 days of paid absence for CME).
- Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401(k) with up to 5% in contributions by VA.
- Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long‑term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement).
- CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full‑time with board certification).
- Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided.
- Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
