EMT | ED Tech

Job Description Under the general supervision of the Director of Emergency Services, the Emergency Medical Technician is responsible for performing various duties and tasks as requested. The EMT must adhere to the scope of practice set by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and must operate under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or paramedic. Clinical Under direct supervision of a registered nurse or paramedic, assists with patient care activities and promptly reports any observed changes in a patient’s condition to the RN/Medic or physician. Performs and documents vital signs, height, weight, intake and output, and reports any changes that are out of the normal range. Obtains laboratory specimens as appropriate (e.g., finger‑stick glucose testing, urine specimens) and transports them to the lab as necessary. Within scope of practice, assists with dressing changes, casting and splinting as needed. Performs 12‑lead EKGs per protocol and in line with departmental EKG metrics. Maintains timely turnover of exam rooms, adhering to infection‑prevention best practices for decontamination, cleaning, and restocking of supplies. Performs roles assigned as part of the care team during emergency‑department trauma cases and resuscitation efforts (CPR, runner, order entry, documentation, etc.). Cross‑trained to perform ED clerical duties: computer work, inputting orders, filing patient charges, answering phones, transporting imaging files and other medical records as appropriate. Executes safe patient transportation within the facility, utilizing safe lifting equipment and good body mechanics. Performs post‑mortem care and assists in transporting bodies to the morgue. As an Advanced EMT, may start IVs within the department after education and demonstrated competency with the house educator; may discontinue IVs as directed. Patient Advocacy Introduces self and clinical role to set the stage for positive patient interaction. Facilitates patient‑ and family‑centered care by clearly communicating the plan of care and educating at a level the patient, family, or caregiver can understand. Delivers age‑specific, individualized patient care. Recognizes and utilizes appropriate resources for non‑English‑speaking patients and those with healthcare literacy, hearing, or sight impairments. Proactively recognizes and reports suspected abuse or neglect (child, elder, sexual, spousal) and reports to supervisor or appropriate authorities. Quality Adheres to Infection Prevention standards, practicing hand hygiene before and after each patient interaction, and holds team members to these standards. Participates in departmental quality reviews and continuous improvement projects. Actively participates in departmental continuous survey readiness activities, collateral duties, and performance improvement projects. Professionalism Demonstrates ability to work independently and within a team. Adheres to standards and codes of conduct that promote cooperation, respect, and trust among peers and colleagues. Maintains professionalism by following the Huggins Hospital dress code. Continues professional growth through maintenance of education hours for license renewals. Maintains an active EMT license and BCLS. Organizational Expectations Timely attendance; employees are expected to come to work daily, on time, and complete scheduled shifts. HIPAA: maintains patient confidentiality. Internal communication: contributes to a positive team performance and a culture of service excellence through effective communication, active listening, and respect. Interpersonal relationships: maintains appropriate relationships with staff, patients, and visitors at all times; works as a team member with other departments. Safety: practices workplace safety daily. Employee Engagement Actively participates in all hospital Service Excellence initiatives and trainings. Attends and participates in a minimum of 50 % of department staff meetings and signs off on review of 100 % of department staff meeting minutes. Completes all required annual education on or before the due date. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Minimal physical effort required with occasional light lifting to a maximum of 25 pounds; stooping; pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work primarily with fingers. Ability to effectively manage considerable mental stress. Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication. Ability to communicate effectively with co‑workers and convey information clearly, concisely, and accurately. Familiarity with computers and other business machines. Qualifications Graduate from an EMT program. One year of experience as an EMT preferred; Emergency Department experience desired. Current BLS certification required.
