The Division of Hearings and Appeals (DHA) is a quasi-judicial, independent entity created to conduct high quality, impartial, independent, and cost and time efficient hearings that serve customer agencies and the citizens of Wisconsin. DHA currently conducts hearings for fifteen state agencies and is also available to do hearings for other agencies when requested. It is a growing agency with a varied caseload which fall under these administrative units: Corrections Unit, General Government Unit, and Public Assistance and Social Services Unit. Position Summary This is a highly complex paraprofessional position in the Milwaukee office responsible for providing program and administrative support for two of the Division of Hearings and Appeals' work units. Duties are of considerable difficulty requiring prudent judgment and discretion, independent decision making and excellent oral and written communication skills. Responsibilities include providing complex legal support in researching and processing appeals, scheduling, rescheduling hearings, drafting decisions and other legal documents for a variety of hearing types. The Division of Hearings and Appeals receives approximately 18,000 hearing requests each year. Hearings are governed by a wide variety of department policies and state statutes. Independent decision making relating to scheduling and re-scheduling hearings requires application of specific statutes, case law and division policies to the facts of each case.

Salary Information This position is assigned to pay schedule-range (02-13) with a starting pay rate of $29.28 per hour, plus excellent benefits . A twelve-month probationary period may be required. Pay for current state employees will be set in accordance with the Wisconsin State Compensation Plan at the time of hire.
Job Details Due to the nature of the position, DOA will conduct background checks on applicants prior to selection. DOA does not sponsor work visas. All persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States, and to complete the required employment eligibility form.
After training for up to 6 months, this position may be eligible for a hybrid remote/in-office work schedule, up to 2 days a week remote, as determined by the supervisor based upon the needs of the position and the work unit. ( Activities may include maintaining multiple calendars, answering confidential phone calls, sending or reviewing email, redacting documents, faxing or scanning documents, etc.). - Maintaining electronic records and files
- Providing customer service to external customers through emails and phone calls
- Using Microsoft Outlook and Word or similar programs in a professional setting [ Activities may include utilizing distribution lists, mail merge (word documents and emails), adding attachments, using the formatting options (i.e. tabs, bullet/ list making, etc.), advanced functions may include delay delivery, voting buttons or read receipts.]
- Experience researching, analyzing, or interpreting information to perform activities such as providing answers to customer questions, developing a recommendation, reaching a conclusion, etc.
- Experience typing transcripts
- Training in legal terminology or experience using legal terminology in a legal setting
