Job Description and Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by ensuring that qualified individuals are using X-ray machines in a safe and appropriate manner through timely, high-quality inspections and investigations.

The Junior (Jr.) Health Physicist (HP) is the entry-level trainee position in the health physicist series. The Jr. HP learns and applies principles, practices, and techniques of radiation and health physics, radiation control regulations, and departmental policies and procedures to review and assist with progressively more difficult and responsible tasks related to the X-Ray Machine Inspection Program, including compliance inspections, radiation safety, and staff work in support of these activities. The position emphasizes fieldwork operations from a state regional compliance office and the incumbent prepares for advancement by participating in on-the-job training and, where appropriate, academic education. The Jr. HP is provided with radiation detection and other equipment necessary to support assigned duties and is expected to use, transport, and care for this equipment.

The incumbent works under the close supervision of the Senior (Sr.) HP in the Inspection, Compliance, and Enforcement (ICE) Section, X-Ray Machine Inspection Unit, Region 3 Sacramento.

Working Conditions

Telework Information

The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.

Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
