Registered Histology Technologist

The Histology Technologist performs laboratory procedures according to established and approved protocols under the technical supervision of the Pathologist. Responsibilities include preparation of frozen section slides, fine needle aspirations, needle biopsies, gross examination of tissue specimens, preparation of microscopic slides for review and diagnosis, routine histo-chemical and immune-cytochemical staining, processing of biological specimens, and recognizing instrument malfunctions. The Technologist also provides laboratory information to authorized sources. Responsibilities Perform routine histology procedures to prepare slides for examination by pathologists, including embedding, cutting, mounting, and staining. Assist or perform frozen sections, touch preps, and gross pathology examinations as needed. Help evaluate new procedures as required. Computer accessioning and proper specimen labeling, ensuring specimen integrity. Dispose of specimens properly. File blocks and slides appropriately. Instruct others in procedures and methods used in the department and check for understanding. Participate in activities to prepare the section for inspection by regulatory agencies. Perform routine maintenance on equipment in the department, alerting supervisor to items needing repair and removing them from service. Maintain supplies at par levels. Operate HIS and LIS technology proficiently. Inform lead or supervisor of any problems, concerns or issues. Maintain a safe environment for self and teammates, applying universal precautions and using appropriate personal protective equipment and infection control barriers. Complete continuing education and in‑service programs to meet regulatory and job requirements. Actively participate in staff meetings. Participate in quality/performance improvement activities. Communicate effectively and appropriately with teammates and supervisor to assure quality and integrity of the service. Education & Qualifications High school diploma required. Registration as a Histologic Technologist (HT, ASCP) preferred. At least one year of experience in histology under the supervision of a pathologist preferred. Knowledge of the materials, procedures and instrumentation used in histology. Good problem‑solving skills. Ability to collaborate well with others. Ability to read, write and communicate effectively in English. Proficiency with LIS, HIS and MS Office, with the ability to learn new software rapidly. Ability to stand on hard surfaces for a significant portion of shift.
