Registrar - Neurology 2027

The Alfred Foundation

Bayside Health Bayside Health is a public health service delivering high-quality care across every stage of life for close to 1.2 million people living in metropolitan Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Koo Wee Rup, Bass Coast and Southern Gippsland. We have more than 15 main sites, including hospitals, centres and clinics that provide comprehensive care from welcoming newborns to supporting older people and a full range of services in between. More than 22,000 dedicated staff are focused on providing exceptional, equitable, and locally connected care through shared expertise, compassion, and a commitment to continuous growth. Education and training are central to staff development as we encourage all employees to strive and thrive. Bayside Health was formed following the merger of Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service, Kooweerup Regional Health Service and Peninsula Health on 1 January 2026. Neurology Advanced Trainee (Post-Core / Third Year) Registrar Positions - Alfred Health The Department of Neurology at Alfred Health has two non-core Advanced Trainee (third year) Registrar positions available for 12 months from February 2027. Applications are encouraged from suitably qualified Neurology Advanced Trainees seeking a third year of clinical neurology training. Both are non-core positions, ideally suited to trainees who have completed their core training and wish to consolidate and tailor their clinical experience ahead of fellowship or consultant practice. The two positions are described below. We are recruiting to both roles. Should only one suitable applicant be identified, the Cabrini-based position will be filled preferentially. Position 1: Alfred–Cabrini Neurology Registrar (Cabrini based) Based within the Neurology service at Cabrini Hospital, this role combines inpatient and outpatient neurology with sub‑specialty electrophysiology exposure, and consolidates clinical experience across both private and tertiary public settings. During weekdays the registrar coordinates daily ward activities for admitted Neurology patients and consults (approximately four hours per day), supervises more junior medical staff, and liaises closely with consultant staff. The Cabrini rotation has been accredited for General Neurology training and encompasses inpatient and outpatient neurology, Neuro‑Otology, Neuro‑Ophthalmology, electrophysiology and EEG reporting, with attendance at the Wednesday morning academic meeting at The Alfred. The position carries two Cabrini-based outpatient clinics per week (Neuro‑ophthalmology and Neuro‑Otology), plus two Alfred-based outpatient clinics per week. In keeping with the third‑year focus, the specific Alfred clinics will be mutually negotiated to reflect the trainee's sub‑specialty interests, drawn from the full range of Alfred Brain clinics (General Neurology, Stroke/TIA, Epilepsy, MSNI, Movement Disorders, Headache, Cognitive/CDAMS, Neuromuscular and Neurophysiology). The registrar also participates in the after‑hours and weekend on‑call Neurology/Stroke roster at Alfred Health (1 in 6). Position 2: Alfred Neurology Registrar (Flexible Sub‑specialty, The Alfred based) This is a newly created non‑core position, converted from a core advanced‑trainee role specifically to offer greater flexibility, and is ideally suited to trainees wishing to tailor a third clinical year around their sub‑specialty interests. Based at The Alfred within the Alfred Brain Clinical Program, the registrar works across the department's inpatient and outpatient services and participates in the after‑hours and weekend on‑call Neurology/Stroke roster (1 in 6). The Alfred is a Comprehensive Stroke Centre with 24/7 endovascular thrombectomy and neurosurgical services and offers one of the broadest sub‑specialty mixes in the state. The defining feature of this position is flexibility in clinic selection. Rather than a fixed sub‑specialty assignment, the third‑year registrar will, in consultation with the Director and Deputy Director, build a weekly outpatient and electrophysiology timetable from the department's sub‑specialty clinics according to interest. Available areas include: General Neurology Stroke/TIA Epilepsy (including video‑EEG monitoring) MS & Neuroimmunology Movement Disorders Headache Cognitive/CDAMS Neuromuscular and Neurophysiology (EMG and EEG teaching and reporting) Neuro‑ophthalmology Otoneurology The role includes supervision and teaching of junior medical staff and students, and active participation in the department's weekly educational program (Neurology Grand Rounds, Neuroradiology meeting and Combined Neuroscience Education). The Department maintains a large research and clinical‑trials portfolio, and the successful applicant is encouraged to engage with these opportunities. Eligibility and Enquiries Applicants for either position must have completed core advanced training in Neurology and hold AHPRA registration without conditions. Please indicate in your application whether you wish to be considered for one or both positions. Applications close: Thursday 16th July 2026 Enquiries: Prof. Helmut Butzkueven — View email address on click.appcast.io / Dr Anna Balabanski — View email address on click.appcast.io We embrace diversity and strive to have a workforce that reflects the communities we serve. We actively encourage applications from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people with disability, and people of all genders, sexualities, and cultural backgrounds. If you require adjustments to the recruitment and selection process, or require an alternative format to any of the application materials, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with the contact person listed on this ad. In accordance with the Health Services Amendment (Mandatory Vaccination of Healthcare Workers) Act 2020, health care workers in Category A or B roles (as determined by the department’s risk ratings) are required to be vaccinated against influenza or hold an acceptable medical exemption. #J-18808-Ljbffr The Alfred Foundation
