Police Officer II

Job Summary An applicant with four complete years of experience, up to six completed years of service, may be eligible for a Police Officer II position. Duties include patrol, security, investigations, crime prevention, surveillance, and related law enforcement functions to ensure safety and security within the University community. Officers may be required to work rotating shifts, may request overtime or on‑call assignments. Service credit is applied for: 1 year per prior patrol/investigation LEO experience, 1 year per prior task force LEO experience, and 1 year per 2 years of prior corrections/ SFO / BCO experience with Adult Probation and Parole. Salary tops at 9 completed years of service. Office of Public Safety oversees multiple divisions including University Police, Campus Security, Health Security, Emergency Management, Emergency Communications, and the central administrative Office of the CSO. More information: publicsafety.utah.edu Responsibilities Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, assess and remedy situations, and file written reports. Conduct or assist in criminal, narcotics, traffic, and gang related investigations, gather evidence, and protect crime scenes. Assist criminal intelligence operations by gathering information from other agencies and the public. Prepare written reports, maintain detailed records for follow-up investigations and court purposes. Perform surveillance in high-risk or known crime areas. Obtain and serve warrants, apprehend suspects, conduct warrantless searches and seizures as necessary. Interview and interrogate witnesses and suspects. Prepare cases for the Office of the Attorney General and testify in court. Participate in the motorist assist program. Maintain issued equipment and supplies. Assist in classroom and field training of new officers; instruct and conduct presentations. Participate in Community Oriented Policing events when required. Use independent judgement and initiative in decision making across police functions. Safely effect arrests, pursue suspects on foot, control combatants, respond to emergencies, and accept rotating shift and 24-hour on-call shifts to protect university community. Minimum Qualifications At least five years of experience as a Police Officer. Certification as a Utah Post LEO (Law Enforcement Officer) prior to hire. U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent resident status in the United States (with five years of legal residency and work authorization). Valid Utah Driver’s License obtained upon hire. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to complete department approved physical fitness test and background investigation, and to submit to a drug screening test. Bachelor’s degree in Criminology, Police Science, or related field preferred; one year of education may substitute for two years of related work experience. Disqualifiers Felony convictions that could have resulted in imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or state penitentiary; felony convictions as a minor may be reviewed individually. Misdemeanor convictions involving violence, sexual conduct, or dishonesty require a minimum two-year waiting period; other misdemeanors may require a one-year wait. Evidence of moral character deficiencies as determined by background investigation. Discharged from military service less than honorably. Failure to pass psychological evaluation for physical, emotional, and mental suitability. Flagrant tattoos, brands, or decals that interfere with professional appearance or duties. Use of illegal drugs, especially LSD or PCP, disqualifies; use of hard drugs or their derivatives within five years prior to application may disqualify. Out‑of‑state lateral applicants must hold Utah POST certification and pass the POST waiver test.
