Speech And Language Pathologist

Conducts assessments and evaluations to determine individuals' levels of receptive and expressive speech and language skills. Assesses swallowing skills and social/pragmatic skills. Develops, modifies, and implements individual and group therapy/treatment programs to enhance communication and address swallowing deficiencies. Recommends changes in food texture and liquid consistency during meals and snacks. Develops plans for medical referrals and confers with medical staff regarding medications to improve swallowing. Participates in or suggests participation in barium swallowing studies and follow-up assessments. Designs and personally delivers speech, language, and dysphagia management services. May include hearing screenings and training for individuals using hearing aids. Provides instruction on beginning reading, word recognition, survival signs, and articulation training. Teaches appropriate functional social communication skills needed during various outings. Demonstrates language techniques and the use of augmentative communication devices. Designs and delivers in-service training to other staff on speech-language techniques and protocols. Acts as a sign language interpreter as necessary. Participates as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide professional insights and goal planning for treatment and care. Attends meetings, workshops, and seminars to improve professional skills and knowledge. Counsels and informs guardians or family members regarding speech-language, hearing, and swallowing issues. Composes and completes reports, lesson plans, and other necessary program-related documents. Operates personal computers using office systems software and specialized communication software to create, edit, and store records. Maintains and manages electronic augmentative communication devices and hearing aids.
