Arborist Ground Operations Trainee

Blue Pine Works is seeking an entry-level Ground Operations Trainee to support our climbers and apprentices while developing the skills needed for a career in professional tree care.

This is a physical, hands-on position centered on keeping the crew safe, organized, and productive. The work includes dragging and processing brush, handling wood, staging ropes and equipment, maintaining tools and work areas, and learning how to support climbing, rigging, and other aerial tree operations from the ground.

Ground operations are not treated as unskilled or dead-end labor at Blue Pine Works. A capable ground worker is an essential part of safe, efficient, and professional tree care. This position includes structured development, formal education, certification opportunities, regular coaching, and increasing responsibility as skills are developed.

No previous tree care experience is required. We are more interested in finding someone dependable, teachable, and motivated to grow than someone who already knows the work. 

Primary Responsibilities

* Drag, stack, and process brush and wood
* Assist with chipping, cleanup, and material handling
* Move, stage, and organize ropes, tools, and equipment
* Support climbers and apprentices during aerial tree operations
* Learn proper rope handling, knots, communication, and ground support procedures
* Assist with jobsite setup, traffic control, and protection of surrounding property
* Maintain orderly trucks, work areas, tools, and equipment
* Perform routine equipment inspections and basic maintenance
* Help keep jobsites safe, organized, and productive
* Participate in training, coaching, and professional development
* Take on greater responsibility as knowledge, judgment, and field skills develop
* Treat coworkers, clients, equipment, trees, and properties with care and respect

Minimum Requirements

* Ability to safely perform physically demanding outdoor work, with or without reasonable accommodation
* Valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record
* Reliable transportation to work
* Ability to read, write, follow instructions, and communicate clearly
* Appropriate clothing and footwear for outdoor work
* Ability to work on uneven terrain and in changing weather conditions
* Willingness to work around machinery, noise, wood debris, and active tree operations
* Dependability and consistent attendance
* Willingness to accept coaching and apply feedback
* Genuine interest in learning, improving, and contributing to the crew

Previous experience in tree care, landscaping, farming, forestry, logging, construction, or equipment operation may be helpful, but it is not required.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this position does not require arriving with tree care experience. We can teach arboricultural skills, equipment operation, rope systems, and jobsite procedures. We are looking for someone who brings reliability, curiosity, humility, awareness, and a genuine desire to become more capable.

At the beginning, success means arriving on time and prepared, listening carefully, asking questions when something is unclear, working with purpose, and taking care of the tools, equipment, properties, and people around you. It means accepting coaching without becoming defensive and understanding that brush handling, cleanup, maintenance, and organization are essential parts of professional tree care.

As the employee develops, success means requiring less direction, recognizing what needs to be done, anticipating the needs of the climber and crew, identifying developing hazards, and taking greater ownership of the jobsite. A skilled ground operations employee does not simply complete assigned labor. They help the entire crew work more safely, efficiently, and thoughtfully.

We do not expect perfection or instant knowledge. We do expect consistent effort, honest communication, personal responsibility, and visible growth. The goal is for the employee to become someone their coworkers trust—someone who contributes to good decisions, takes pride in the finished result, and makes the crew stronger by being part of it.

Training and Career Development

This position begins at $15.00 per hour and includes a structured, four-step Ground Operations Development Program. Employees who successfully complete all four steps may advance to $22.00 per hour. The program is designed to be completed in approximately 12 to 18 months, although actual progression depends on the employee’s pace, participation, demonstrated competency, judgment, reliability, and readiness for greater responsibility. Additional progression is available after completion of the program.

Blue Pine Works provides a combination of hands-on instruction, formal education, certification opportunities, and practical field development. The company pays the cost of approved training programs, certifications, examinations, and educational requirements associated with the development path.

As a small company, we work closely with each employee throughout their development. Coaching and feedback are provided regularly, with formal performance and development reviews conducted quarterly. Employees will understand what they are doing well, where they need to improve, and what skills they must demonstrate to complete the next step and earn the corresponding wage increase.

Advancement is based on demonstrated ability, not simply time employed or coursework completed. Employees must be able to safely and consistently apply what they have learned, take increasing ownership of their responsibilities, and contribute more effectively to the crew.

The four-step program is the beginning of a broader career path. Employees may continue developing toward advanced ground operations, crew leadership, and foreman responsibilities. Those interested in aerial tree work may also pursue entry into Blue Pine Works’ arborist apprenticeship and climbing pathway. Additional compensation opportunities are available as tenured employees develop specialized skills, leadership ability, and greater responsibility within the company.
