General Summary $24.94- $29.09 Looking for a role where you can use your law enforcement skills to protect the public and support the justice system every day? As a Court Deputy, you will help maintain safety and order within Oakland County’s courts and government facilities while interacting with judges, court staff, attorneys, and the public. What You’ll Do Maintain security at the Oakland County Courthouse, County Complex Buildings, Friend of the Court, and District Courts. Screen visitors using x‑ray machines, handheld metal detectors, and visual inspections of bags, purses, and packages to detect weapons or prohibited items. Provide security within courtrooms, judges’ chambers, probation departments, cashier areas, and building perimeters including parking lots. Respond to emergency situations and assist with maintaining order and making arrests when necessary. Provide emergency first aid and initial fire response until appropriate emergency personnel arrive. Monitor building activity and ensure compliance with courthouse security procedures. Utilize Countywide and department‑specific software systems to complete reports and other job duties. Minimum Qualifications Be a High School graduate or have a Certificate of successful completion of the General Education Development Test (GED). Have at least two (2) years of full‑time experience as a police officer, military, corrections, or federal law enforcement officer. Possess at least one (1) year of full‑time work experience as an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Deputy; OR Have a current MCOLES license; OR be currently attending a Police Academy training or its equivalent as required by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES); OR Have successfully completed the police academy and be eligible to be licensed prior to the date of hire. Be an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Reserve Deputy, Marine Deputy, Mounted Deputy, or Park Deputy and have completed 1,000 hours of service; OR Successfully complete a Reserve Police Academy and complete 1,000 hours of service. Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Have not been convicted of a violation of criminal law including domestic violence. Have at least 20/20 corrected vision with both eyes and normal color vision and depth perception. Have normal corrected hearing in each ear as per MCOLES. Special Requirements Must maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s or chauffeur’s license. Must maintain firearms qualification and deputy status. Background investigation covering employment, school, home, credit, criminal, military or other personal records. Any conviction for moving traffic violations, accidents, non‑moving traffic violations, or other laws will be reviewed by the Sheriff’s Office before appointment. Convictions of the Domestic Violence Statute will be a disqualifying factor. When Assigned to Courts or Other Satellite Locations Deputies operate stationary x‑ray machines and hand‑held metal detectors located in courthouse lobbies to screen visitors for weapons and unauthorized objects. Deputies direct the flow of traffic through the inspection area, perform visual inspections of briefcases, purses, and packages, and use hand‑held metal detectors as necessary. They check identification for individuals authorized to carry weapons, secure firearms in lock‑boxes, and may search for concealed weapons or contraband. Deputies respond to disturbances, delay and arrest disorderly persons, restrain individuals, assist with arrests, and manage emergency situations involving illness, injury, or court‑room incidents. They use a two‑way radio to place and receive calls and request backup support, and may provide emergency first aid or CPR until medical assistance arrives. When Assigned to District Courts Provide security in probation departments, front lobby and cashier areas, and outside the perimeter of courthouse buildings including parking lots. Additional Duties & Responsibilities Answer questions, provide directions, and give basic information to the public regarding judicial and other county offices found in the courthouse. Utilize current countywide and/or department‑specific software to complete assignments. Essential Mental & Physical Requirements Ability to guard an area for a full eight‑hour day; operate a motor vehicle; speak and give commands; perform inspections and deliver items. Working Conditions Work is performed mainly inside buildings or in a motor vehicle. Occasionally duties may require going outside to deliver items or search areas. Additional Desirable Qualifications Reasonable ability to make decisions under adverse conditions. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Skill in writing general reports. Ability to provide information to the general public. Ability to make routine decisions in accordance with departmental policies and procedures. Ability and skill to maintain prescribed uniform clothing and personal equipment. Knowledge of first‑aid methods. Experience performing security work that requires independent judgment. Night vision certification. Instrument rating in rotarycraft or fixed‑wing aircraft. Current Flight Instructor Certification in rotarycraft or fixed‑wing aircraft. Familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, databases, e‑mail, and internet software.
