Job Description
This urgent need requires an experienced CLS with excellent transfusion service (blood banking) skills. The role involves performing routine and complex laboratory procedures, including specimen processing, testing, calculating and reporting results, maintaining quality control, operating and troubleshooting laboratory instruments, and assisting with protocol development. The role may also include phlebotomy and other patient-centered tasks. The successful candidate will contribute to maintaining high-quality laboratory operations, participate in process improvements, and ensure compliance with all regulatory standards.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine and complex laboratory procedures in assigned sections.
- Operate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments; perform minor repairs or escalate as needed.
- Cross-train in multiple laboratory sections.
- Follow and document quality control procedures.
- Calculate, verify, and report laboratory results accurately.
- Utilize Laboratory Information System properly.
- Notify appropriate personnel of critical findings.
- Handle patient specimens with care, considering pediatric volumes when applicable.
- Assist in evaluating and implementing new testing protocols.
- Perform patient care duties as appropriate, adapting to individual needs.
- Adhere to CHRISTUS Health core values and regulatory requirements.
- Complete all compliance and documentation tasks.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor's degree or higher in a chemical, physical, biological, or clinical lab science/medical technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent training per CLIA regulations.
- Experience: No experience required for accredited program graduates; one year of approved clinical laboratory experience preferred, including rotations in blood banking, microbiology, chemistry, hematology, immunology, urinalysis, or body fluids.
- Certifications: MT, MLS, CLS, or MLT from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS; must keep certification current. New graduates eligible with Board Certification within 1 year of hire (excluding Louisiana).
