About the Association

The Wausau Area Builders Association is a membership organization serving builders, trade contractors, suppliers, and industry partners across the greater Wausau area. WABA members build homes and businesses throughout north central Wisconsin, and the association supports them through advocacy, education, member events, and industry programs such as the Parade of Homes and Build My Future. WABA is affiliated with the Wisconsin Builders Association and the National Association of Home Builders.

The Role

The Executive Officer (EO) is the chief administrative officer of the association. The EO recommends and participates in the formulation of new policies, makes decisions within the bounds of existing policies, and plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the staff, programs, and activities that keep the association’s goals and objectives on track. The position reports to the President and Executive Committee.

Responsibilities

•       Serve as the chief administrative officer of the association, carrying out Board decisions and making day-to-day decisions within established policy.

•       Keep the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Officers informed on the conditions and operations of the association; attend all Board and Executive Committee meetings.

•       Plan, formulate, and recommend the basic policies and programs that advance the association’s objectives.

•       Oversee preparation of agendas and reports for all committee meetings, and provide staff support to committees.

•       Develop and recommend an annual budget with the Treasurer and Finance Committee, and operate within established guidelines.

•       Oversee association assets and investments, and safeguard all funds, physical assets, and property in line with the policy and procedures document.

•       Manage the administrative operations of the association and develop the policies, procedures, and programs to carry them out.

•       Recruit, hire, train, and motivate association staff; set performance standards and conduct evaluations at the discretion of the Board.

•       Direct and coordinate all approved programs, projects, and major activities of staff.

•       Plan, organize, and direct membership promotion and retention programs alongside the Membership Committee.

•       Provide staff support in planning and conducting all association events.

•       Oversee all communications to the membership, and create and distribute member communications per policies and procedures.

•       Work alongside the President to develop and approve official publications.

•       Support the efforts of the Legislative Committee.

•       Maintain effective relationships with public and private organizations so the interests of the association are realized.

•       Serve as liaison with the Wisconsin Builders Association (WBA) and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), attending membership and Executive Officer meetings at Board discretion.

•       Execute contracts and commitments as authorized by the Board of Directors or established policy.

•       Manage the office space and report maintenance issues to the Board of Directors and/or landlord.

•       Safeguard confidential information related to the daily functions of the association and its members.

•       Carry out other responsibilities as delegated by the Officers and Board of Directors.

What We’re Looking For

•       Strong administrative and organizational skills, with the judgment to make sound decisions inside established policy.

•       Clear, professional communicator — comfortable in front of a board, a committee, a membership, and the public.

•       Experience with budgeting, financial oversight, and working with a treasurer or finance committee.

•       Event planning and coordination experience.

•       Comfortable managing staff and volunteers.

•       Discretion with confidential association and member information.

•       Association management, nonprofit, membership organization, or construction industry background is a plus.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

•       Primarily an office environment, with work duties including sitting at a desk and occasional walking, standing, and lifting.

•       Events require prolonged standing and walking.

•       Able to lift 40 pounds.

•       Must have a vehicle, or consistent access to a vehicle, and a good driving record.

•       Travel throughout the WABA service area, and occasionally outside the area.

•       Events may occasionally require working outside in extreme heat, cold, rain, or snow.
