Power BI Developer

Job Description

Design and develop intuitive Power BI dashboards using monitoring data provided through SQL Server. Engage with stakeholders to understand operational decisions, reporting requirements, KPIs, thresholds, user journeys, and security needs. Translate requirements into wireframes, prototypes, semantic models, DAX measures, historical trends, interactive reports, and drill-through experiences.

Develop reporting for operational health, SSAS availability, processing and query performance, capacity and growth, and alert status. Ensure accurate datetime filtering, baseline comparison, warning and critical indicators, and reconciliation with SQL Server data. Configure available connectivity, refresh, RLS, workspaces, reports, dashboards, and apps. Support testing, UAT, deployment, documentation, training, and knowledge transfer.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct discovery workshops to understand users, operational decisions, information needs, KPIs, thresholds, and acceptance criteria.
• Define and maintain the KPI catalogue, including metric definition, source, calculation, threshold, owner, report page, and visual.
• Map SQL Server tables and serving views to datasets, KPIs, report pages, and drill-through details.
• Create wireframes and prototypes for stakeholder review and design approval.
• Define page layouts, navigation, visual hierarchy, filters, slicers, tooltips, bookmarks, drill-through, and interactions.
• Select appropriate charts and visuals based on the metric, trend, comparison, or operational action.
• Define Power BI themes, branding, RAG colours, typography, consistency, and accessibility standards.
• Build and optimise semantic models, relationships, hierarchies, date tables, and user-friendly metadata.
• Develop and validate DAX for KPIs, trends, baselines, deviations, thresholds, severity.
• Develop dashboards covering operational health, processing performance, capacity and growth, query performance, alerts, and historical trends.
• Implement datetime filtering and drill-through to supporting monitoring, processing, query, or error details.
• Reconcile Power BI measures and report results against SQL Server queries and approved metric definitions.
• Design and implement row-level security.
• Configure available gateway connectivity, parameters, refresh schedules, workspaces, reports, dashboards, and apps.
• Perform developer testing covering semantic models, DAX, KPIs, filters, visuals, drill-through, RLS, refresh, and report performance.
• Support QA, UAT, defect resolution, deployment, production validation, user guidance, training, and handover.

Skill Set

• Strong Power BI Desktop and Power BI Service experience.
• Advanced semantic modelling, star-schema design, and DAX.
• SQL Server connectivity, Power Query, and SQL reconciliation.
• KPI, baseline, threshold, severity, variance calculations.
• Historical trends, date tables, time intelligence, and datetime filtering.
• Drill-through, tooltips, bookmarks, slicers, navigation, and visual interactions.
• RLS, refresh scheduling, gateway concepts, workspace governance, app publishing, and access control.
• Dashboard discovery, KPI finalisation, wireframing, prototyping, visual hierarchy, chart selection, and UX design.
• Theme, branding, colour, typography, accessibility, and usability standards.
• Power BI dataset, DAX, SQL-query, and visual-performance optimisation.
• Understanding of SSAS availability, cube processing, partitions, dimensions, sessions, queries, memory, capacity, and monitoring metrics.
• Developer testing, source-to-report reconciliation, deployment validation, documentation, training, and stakeholder communication.
