Job Description

The Phlebotomist I plays a key role in safely collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting smooth laboratory workflow. This position performs venipunctures and other specimen collections, ensures accurate labeling and processing, maintains compliance with safety regulations, and provides courteous, clear communication to patients and healthcare staff in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in accordance with established procedures.
• Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens following standard protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and processing.
• Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and prepare specimens based on specific test requirements.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against provider orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport and follow required procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
• Store specimens at appropriate temperatures and place samples in correct collection containers or tubes.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain detailed documentation.
• Record maintenance data and support decontamination procedures as required.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders related to laboratory testing.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and quality standards.
• Attend and complete annual department trainings and required compliance education.
• Answer telephone calls and relay laboratory results or information to satisfy inquiries, following established protocols.
• Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection and processing.
• Support training efforts and make recommendations for workflow improvements to enhance efficiency and quality.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations.
• Minimum of 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a hospital or fast-paced laboratory setting.
• 0–2 years of overall related experience.
• Proficiency performing venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Demonstrated experience with blood draws and specimen collection, including urine and fecal specimens.
• Ability to accurately label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and prepare specimens according to test requirements.
• Strong understanding of laboratory requisitions and ability to match them correctly to specimen tubes.
• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safety and compliance.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
• High School Diploma or GED.
• Effective communication skills to clearly explain procedures and interact with patients and healthcare staff.
• Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment with strong attention to detail.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience working in a medical or laboratory environment.
• Experience in pediatric phlebotomy or comfort working with a wide range of patient populations.
• Customer service skills and a professional, courteous approach to patient interaction.
• Experience supporting workflow improvements, troubleshooting, and informal training of colleagues.
• Familiarity with general laboratory specimen processing workflows and procedures.

Work Environment

This is a full-time, first-shift position in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting. The role involves frequent patient contact for blood and other specimen collection, as well as regular use of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and specimen transport containers. The environment emphasizes safety, regulatory compliance, and accurate documentation, with ongoing departmental training to support professional development and high-quality patient care.

This is a Contract position based out of Tulsa, OK.

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Tulsa,OK.
