Shift Supervisor

What this position is about

The Shift Supervisor leads production operations during assigned shifts, ensuring a safe, efficient, and high-quality work environment while achieving production targets. This role is responsible for supervising and developing team members, coordinating daily manufacturing activities, maintaining compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements, fostering open communication, and driving continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational performance and team effectiveness.

Responsibilities

Cell Operation

• Act as the owner of the assigned production area, managing designated lines and supervising team members during shift operations.

• Oversee daily production activities, ensuring effective employee performance, equipment run-time, and timely completion of tasks.

• Monitor and support employees performing machine operations, safety inspections, troubleshooting, and product inspections.

• Maintain a strong presence on the production floor, including standing and walking throughout the shift.

• Lead daily shift handovers, line meetings, brand changes, clean-inspect-lubricate routines, and stock counts.

• Develop vacation schedules for team members while balancing business and employee needs. 

Cell Improvement

• Participate in root cause analyses related to operational deficiencies and complaints.

• Initiate corrective actions and operational improvements.

• Lead and support projects focused on improving safety, quality, efficiency, and spare-parts costs.

• Encourage employees to identify improvement opportunities and contribute practical solutions.

• Implement appropriate solutions to support the achievement of continuous improvement goals. 

Cell Development

• Develop, maintain, and update quality-system documentation and procedures relevant to shift operations.

• Ensure team compliance with all applicable operational and quality procedures.

• Manage employee work-time records, including attendance tracking and overtime reporting.

Environment, Health and Safety

• Ensure compliance with all JTI health and safety requirements.

• Understand and maintain the required safety control measures.

• Demonstrate safe working behaviors and enforce workplace safety standards.

• Report and address incidents, near misses, hazards, and unsafe conditions.

• Support the continuous improvement of EHS processes and the elimination of workplace hazards.

People Development

• Recruit, motivate, and support the professional development of team members.

• Provide coaching, training, and constructive feedback to strengthen individual and team capabilities. 

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a technical, or vocational training program is preferred.

• Minimum of two years of supervisory experience managing hourly employees in a production environment.

• Experience managing employees in a unionized environment is preferred.

• Familiarity with Integrated Work System, or IWS, principles is desirable.

Skills and Knowledge

• Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.

• Experience using Oracle or SAP is preferred.

• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.

• Ability to solve problems, establish priorities, and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. 

Language

• Fluency in written and spoken English.
