Speech Language Pathologist
The Speech and Language Pathologist is directly responsible for providing diagnostic therapeutic services to students identified with speech/language impairments. The Speech and Language Pathologist must demonstrate knowledge of the nature of speech and language communication needs including the cognitive aspects of communication, social aspects of communication, communication modalities, the impact of hearing loss on the development of speech and language, second language acquisition and oral motor functioning and skills including feeding.
Essential functions include assessing students' communication skills, collaborating with colleagues and parents to plan and implement effective student programs, demonstrating knowledge of second language learning issues, instructing eligible students in the use of appropriate communication technologies, interpreting medical reports, maintaining files and records, providing screening and diagnostic services, participating in meetings and providing in-service training, participating in Individualized Education Plans, providing speech and language services using various models, utilizing and recommending technology and assistive technologies.
Other functions include using professional skills for the diagnosis, remediation and treatment of speech and language disorders, assuming responsibility for continued professional growth, assuming other duties and special projects as assigned, and supporting NSSEO policy, NSSEO and governing board goals and objectives, and The School Code of Illinois.
The working environment requires strength and/or endurance for lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling, upper extremity physical capabilities reaching, handling, and/or fine motor dexterity, and exposure to hazardous conditions is seldom present.
Minimum qualifications include a valid Professional Educator License endorsed for a Speech and Language Pathologist, ability to travel and move about NSSEO and district buildings, ability to communicate effectively, experience with students with special needs, and participation in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training.
Specific requirements include proficient use of technology systems, assistive technology devices, ability to develop, implement, and monitor speech, language, communication programming and supports, independently problem-solving, scheduling daily activities, modeling good communication, communicating and working effectively with professional staff and parents, assessing student's performance in the area of visual, auditory, communicative, academic performance and behavior, completing Assistive Technology evaluations within specified timeframes, managing time and schedule efficiently, using specialized equipment effectively, maintaining confidentiality, meeting deadlines and schedules, and making data-driven decisions for meaningful educational activities.
