About the Role  

The Construction Layout Specialist is a key technical partner to RNGD’s Infrastructure operations, responsible for translating project plans, models, and control information into precise field layout that enables our teams to build safely, accurately, and efficiently. Working as part of RNGD’s Surveying Team, this role supports multiple active construction projects and partners closely with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, field crews, and trade partners to anticipate layout needs, establish and maintain project control, verify critical dimensions and elevations, and provide the field information required to keep work moving.

This is a hands-on field position for someone who understands that surveying and layout are more than measurements—they are critical controls that influence productivity, quality, cost, and schedule. The Construction Layout Specialist is expected to understand the work being built, identify discrepancies before they become field issues, and use both technical expertise and sound construction judgment to support successful execution.

The ideal candidate brings strong civil construction knowledge, confidence with modern survey and positioning technology, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to operate independently while building trusted relationships across project teams. Core Responsibilities

• Construction Surveying & Field Layout
  • Perform accurate construction layout and survey activities across multiple active Infrastructure projects based on project priorities and operational needs.
  • Establish, verify, maintain, and transfer horizontal and vertical control throughout the lifecycle of assigned projects.
  • Perform layout for civil and infrastructure scopes including roadway, utilities, drainage, structures, piling, foundations, grading, and other project-specific work.
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, plans, specifications, profiles, cross-sections, details, and digital models to accurately translate design intent into field conditions.
  • Calculate and establish points, lines, grades, elevations, offsets, slopes, and other field information necessary for construction operations.
  • Perform field verification and as-built measurements to confirm completed work and existing conditions.
  • Protect and maintain project control points, benchmarks, stakes, and other survey references throughout construction.

• Survey Technology & Machine Control
  • Operate GNSS/GPS equipment, Robotic Total Stations, auto levels, data collectors, and other surveying and positioning technology used in RNGD’s field operations.
  • Set up, calibrate, verify, and troubleshoot survey equipment to maintain reliable field performance and measurement accuracy.
  • Set up and verify machine-control-enabled equipment utilizing GNSS and Robotic Total Station technology.
  • Support field teams in the effective use of machine control, digital models, and positioning technology.
  • Utilize Trimble Siteworks or equivalent platforms to perform field layout, data collection, staking, verification, and related survey functions.
  • Maintain working knowledge of evolving surveying, positioning, and construction technology and help identify opportunities to improve field efficiency and accuracy.

• Quality Control & Field Verification
  • Serve as a critical quality-control checkpoint between project information and field execution by independently verifying layout before critical work proceeds.
  • Cross-check calculations, coordinates, elevations, dimensions, control information, and layout data prepared by office and field personnel.
  • Identify discrepancies between drawings, models, specifications, control information, and actual field conditions and communicate concerns before they impact construction.
  • Verify critical construction elements at appropriate stages to help prevent rework, dimensional conflicts, and costly field errors.
  • Perform checks and documentation necessary to confirm completed work conforms to project requirements.
  • Maintain accurate, legible, organized, and complete records of survey activities, control information, field measurements, calculations, and verification work.

• Project Planning & Operational Coordination
  • Partner with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, and field leadership to understand upcoming work and proactively plan surveying and layout activities.
  • Prioritize daily and weekly survey needs across assigned projects based on schedule, sequencing, crew requirements, and critical construction activities.
  • Anticipate future layout requirements and ensure necessary control, calculations, equipment, models, and field information are available before crews need them.
  • Communicate clearly with field leadership regarding layout status, constraints, discrepancies, and information needed to maintain production.
  • Coordinate survey activities around active construction operations while minimizing disruption to crews and equipment.
  • Assist with traffic control, site access, signage, and other field requirements associated with safely performing survey activities when required.

• Technical Problem-Solving & Construction Support
  • Apply surveying knowledge and construction judgment to resolve field layout challenges and support efficient project execution.
  • Investigate conflicting or incomplete project information and collaborate with project leadership to determine appropriate next steps.
  • Recognize conditions that could affect constructability, layout accuracy, production, or project quality and elevate them proactively.
  • Support quantity verification, existing-condition surveys, as-built information, and other field measurements required by project teams.
  • Understand the downstream impact of survey and layout decisions and approach every assignment with a strong sense of accuracy, accountability, and ownership.

• Team Development & Continuous Improvement
  • Train and mentor developing team members in construction layout practices, survey fundamentals, equipment operation, field procedures, and quality expectations.
  • Share technical knowledge and field lessons that strengthen the capabilities of RNGD’s Surveying Team and project operations.
  • Reinforce consistent surveying practices, documentation standards, and quality-control processes across projects.
  • Contribute ideas for improving workflows, technology utilization, field productivity, and coordination between surveying and project teams.
  • Model a collaborative, solutions-oriented approach and help create an environment where team members ask questions, learn, and continuously improve.

Preferred Qualifications

• 3+ years of progressively responsible construction surveying, construction layout, or related field experience; experience supporting heavy civil or infrastructure construction strongly preferred.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience performing construction layout independently in active field environments.
• Experience with one or more relevant construction scopes such as heavy and light roadway, grading, aboveground and underground utilities, drainage, industrial work, piling, bridges, structures, and building foundations.
• Strong working knowledge of construction survey principles, horizontal and vertical control, elevations, grades, slopes, offsets, coordinates, and field calculations.
• Strong applied knowledge of algebra, geometry, and trigonometry as used in construction surveying and layout.
• Ability to read, interpret, and work from civil construction drawings, specifications, profiles, cross-sections, details, and digital project information.
• Proficiency operating GNSS/GPS systems, Robotic Total Stations, auto levels, data collectors, and related surveying equipment.
• Proficiency with Trimble Siteworks or comparable construction surveying and positioning technology strongly preferred.
• Experience with machine control systems and the ability to set up, verify, and troubleshoot GNSS- and RTS-enabled equipment preferred.
• Working knowledge of Procore, Microsoft Office, and related construction technology platforms.
• Strong technical problem-solving skills with the ability to recognize discrepancies, validate information, and determine when an issue should be escalated.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize survey requests across multiple projects or crews, and adapt quickly as field conditions and construction priorities change.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to work effectively with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, craft professionals, trade partners, and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability or willingness to train and mentor less-experienced team members.
• High school diploma or GED required; technical training, surveying coursework, industry certifications, or an associate degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, or a related discipline is a plus.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation with the ability to travel between assigned project sites as business needs require.
• Ability to perform field-based work in active construction environments and varying weather and site conditions.
