Interim Employment Attorney

Major, Lindsey & Africa’s Interim Legal Talent group has a need for an interim Employment Attorney to provide U.S. employment law counseling and employee relations support to an in-house legal team during a leave of absence. The engagement is targeted to start in June or early July 2026 and is expected to run approximately 4–6 months, with potential to extend. The preference is for an attorney to be onsite five days per week; however, for the right candidate, there is flexibility for 3–4 days per week onsite. The client is also open to either full-time support or as part-time support structured as daily hours 5 days/week, with a combination of in-person and remote work.
Overview : Our client is seeking an interim Employment Attorney to serve as the primary U.S. employment law resource, partnering closely with HR and business stakeholders on day-to-day counseling and risk management across a broad range of employee matters.

Experience :
- 5–12 years of employment law experience (mid-level), with strong practical counseling skills
- Hands-on employee relations experience, including investigations, disciplinary actions, and terminations
- Comfort advising on multi-state U.S. employment law issues (Illinois a key jurisdiction; California and New York exposure a plus)
- Ability to work directly with HR and business stakeholders and provide clear, pragmatic advice in a fast-paced environment
- Able to hit the ground running with minimal ramp-up and operate independently
Location: Chicago, IL
Responsibilities :
- Provide employment law counseling to HR and business stakeholders on day-to-day employee relations matters
- Advise on investigations, disciplinary actions, and terminations, including risk analysis and recommended approach
- Support organizational changes, restructuring initiatives, and workforce-related decisions
- Review and update employment policies, templates, and agreements to ensure legal compliance
- Partner with global legal team members and cross-functional stakeholders as needed
- Coordinate with external counsel on specialized matters when appropriate
Qualifications :
- Licensed Employment Attorney in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Ability to operate independently and hit the ground running with minimal training or oversight
- Strong judgment and ability to assess risk and deliver practical, business-oriented advice
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; collaborative, approachable, and confident working with diverse stakeholders
- Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and workstreams simultaneously
- Comfortable working in a hybrid, on-site environment and collaborating across time zones
- Comfort working on-site in Chicago as needed and collaborating across time zones
