Job Title: Able Seaman SOC Code: 53-5011 FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt Department/Location: Alaskan Waters Reports to: Captain Status: Full-time, Seasonal EEO-1: 7-Operatives Schedule: 12 Hour Days, 7 days a week. Work is on a seasonal basis. Summary Stand watch to look for obstructions in path of vessel, measure water depth, turn wheel on bridge, or use emergency equipment as directed by captain, mate, or pilot. Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear. Perform a variety of maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship and to maintain line and ship equipment. Essential Functions Adhere to the QSEMS (Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management System) including the Quality Assurance Manual (QAM) and the Operating Procedures Manual (OPM). Handle lines to moor vessel to wharves, tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig towing lines. Lower and man lifeboat in case of emergencies. Move controls or turn hand wheels to raise or lower passenger or vehicle landing ramps. Load or unload material from barges, scows, and dredges. Lubricate machinery and equipment. Examine cables that hold vessels in tow and tighten cables to ensure vessels are snug. Splice and repair cables and ropes. Paint lifeboats, decks, and superstructure of vessel. Insert blocks under wheels of vehicles to prevent them from moving. Stand steering watches or lookout watches while underway. Sweep and wash decks. Work aboard watercraft, such as dredges, ferryboats, scows, and river boats. Performing other related duties, as assigned. Education and/or Experience Minimum: Merchant Mariner Credential AB Special TWIC Valid Driver License Preferred: A/B Unlimited First Aid/CPR Equipment Operator Basic Safety Training (BST) Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge and experience tow towing vessels and all methods of towing. Knowledge of and ability to use Internet software and the ability to use Microsoft Office and email. Skill in controlling operations of equipment or systems on the vessel. Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Skill in problem solving and reacting quickly with rapidly changing situations. Knowledge of general machines and tools, which include: anchor lines, anchor rollers, depth gauges, hoists, marine signaling systems, and winches. Hazards Moving Mechanical Parts: Exposure to engine components, drive trains/tracks, and other mechanical parts. Electrical: Potential exposure to electric shock from generator sets and other site equipment. Work at Heights: Occasionally exposed to situations which require fall protection. Radiant Energy: Active Radar, rarely exposed. Fuel & Chemicals: Exposure to diesel fuel, petroleum distillates, and related hazards. General Construction Hazards: Must remain aware of potential risks associated with heavy equipment and construction environments.
