Reporting to the Manager of Facilities Maintenance, and under the priorities established by the shop lead, this position provides plumbing and pipefitting services as an integral part of the operations and maintenance of the university.

Operations and Maintenance (85%)

• Perform technical duties in the general maintenance of all mechanical systems including installing, repairing or replacing plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment.
• Analyze the effectiveness of current materials and systems and recommending changes to improve the cost effectiveness or energy efficiency of existing systems.
• Inspect, diagnose malfunctions, and repair, pressure regulators, tanks, piping and auxiliary devices on RO/DI systems, swimming pools, water features, potable water, air, vacuum, gas, and drainage systems.
• Install, service, repair and adjust pumps, valves, stills, heat exchangers, and coils. Assist in the repair of heating, cooling, and ventilation systems.
• Repair, replace or install all types of plumbing fixtures such as water closets, sinks, showers, drinking fountains, kitchen, laboratory, and other equipment.
• Auger drain lines.
• Diagnose and correct potable water cross connections, water pressure issues, and retention systems.
• Construct various types of pipe joints for high or low-pressure systems, including threading, brazing, soldering. Cut, fit, fabricate, and assemble steel, copper, brass, glass, plastic, cast iron pipe.
• Test and maintain backflow assembly devices.
• Design and build piping assemblies using standard piping practices.
• Assist in identifying and implementing energy and water conservation projects.
• Provide direction and inspect contractor's work to see that work is performed to campus specifications.
• Recommend purchase of equipment and supplies for the shop operation, maintenance and repairs.
• Read and interpret plans, blueprints, and sketches.
• Order materials and supplies as required.
• Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
• Plan and organize assigned work to fulfill task standards, meet schedule requirements, and maintain workload balance.
• Work autonomously or as part of a team, depending on the project or problem being addressed.
• Properly and safely use appropriate tools used in performing required tasks. Account for and maintain university-owned tools and equipment; repair and maintain tools as needed. Maintain a safe and clean shop space.
• Follow and promote established safety rules and regulations; attend safety trainings as required. Lockout tagout procedures must be followed.
• Work in a safe, clean and respectful manner while performing work on campus. Work in occupied spaces with minimal disruption of campus activities.

Scheduling (5%)

• Schedule work taking into account customer requests, space available and potential disruption to adjacent academic, work and living areas.

Communication and Customer Service (5%)

• Communicate with the Shop Lead, the requester, and other staff as needed regarding development and status of work requests. Coordinate with the Facilities Managers on project request recommendations, estimates, and work management reports as required.

Administrative (5%)

• Open, update, track and complete all work orders assigned. Complete all paperwork and tracking required for personal time sheets in a timely manner. Attend departmental meetings as required.

Minimum Qualifications

• WA State Journeyman's Plumbers License; Required to obtain City of Seattle 3rd Grade Steam Engineers License, AS-1 Sprinkler Confidence Testing License, BOC Certificate, Backflow Certification, City of Seattle Gas piping License.

Preferred Qualifications

• City of Seattle Refrigeration Journeyman/Operator License and Washington State HVAC/refrigeration system (6B) License.

Compensation at a Glance

Hourly Rate: $47.82 Annual Salary: approximately $99,465.60

Positions designated as hybrid eligible may offer the opportunity for a hybrid work schedule after successful completion of an introductory period of 3–6 months. In these cases, the role typically begins fully on campus to support onboarding and training, with the potential to transition to a hybrid arrangement thereafter.

Positions designated as on-site are not eligible for hybrid work and are expected to remain fully on campus.
