Job Overview

The Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR) is seeking an experienced Revenue Specialist to support tax administration, compliance, collections, auditing, and taxpayer assistance activities. This position requires a strong background in accounting, tax regulations, financial analysis, and customer service. The ideal candidate will be responsible for researching complex tax issues, reviewing financial records, conducting audits, maintaining assessment records, and ensuring compliance with state tax laws.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide technical and procedural assistance to taxpayers, tax practitioners, and internal state agencies.
• Research complex taxpayer accounts, tax returns, payments, and outstanding tax liabilities using DOR databases and tracking systems.
• Create tax billings and liabilities based on court orders and process adjustments for penalties and interest.
• Conduct investigations and collect supporting evidence while maintaining proper documentation and chain of custody.
• Review confidential taxpayer information requests and ensure compliance with applicable confidentiality laws.
• Research taxpayers who have failed to file required tax returns.
• Analyze financial statements, tax returns, and supporting documentation to determine accuracy and compliance.
• Perform audit testing, evaluate findings, and prepare detailed documentation.
• Monitor and track assessments, collections, and case activities.
• Identify discrepancies, inconsistencies, and unusual financial trends through systematic data analysis.
• Prepare reports and maintain accurate records of investigations and audit activities.

Additional Responsibilities (Based on Assignment)

• Conduct desk audits involving non-filers, underreported taxes, refund claims, and compliance reviews.
• Perform investigations related to tax fraud, enforcement, and internal affairs.
• Serve as the lead investigator for assigned cases from initiation through final resolution.
• Prepare documentation and testimony for administrative hearings or court proceedings when required.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of experience in accounting, tax collection, finance, auditing, or customer service.
• Extensive knowledge of state and federal tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements.
• Strong understanding of accounting principles, auditing techniques, and financial analysis.
• Experience using tax processing systems, tracking applications, and database management tools (experience with DOR systems is highly preferred).
• Knowledge of taxpayer accounting and auditing systems.
• Ability to research tax laws, interpret regulations, and apply legal precedents.
• Experience reviewing financial documents and identifying discrepancies or abnormal trends.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and critical thinking skills.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with taxpayers and stakeholders.
• Thorough understanding of confidentiality laws, ethics, and handling sensitive taxpayer information.
• Ability to testify clearly and professionally during hearings or legal proceedings, if required.
