Job Description Virginia Peninsula Community College is a two-year institution of higher education established as a part of a statewide system of community colleges. It primarily serves the residents of the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York. The mission of the Department of Police, Safety, and Security is to cultivate a safe and secure campus environment and community, deter crime and mitigate injury, promote positive and trusting relationships with the students, staff, faculty, and community, and to serve the students, staff, faculty, and community efficiently and effectively. Police Officers contribute to the holistic learning and working environment offered to all who enter the Virginia Peninsula Community College campus. As members of the Department of Police, Safety, and Security, and under the supervision of an assigned department supervisor, Police Officers uphold and enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the rules and regulations of the college. Police officers serve and protect faculty, staff, students, guests, and the property of Virginia Peninsula Community College, creating an environment that fosters a sense of safety and security in a manner that ensures a high level of service professionalism. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (Clery Act) and Responsible Employee (Title IX). Police officers provide information, directions, and assistance to the campus and the surrounding community. They promote compliance with college parking and traffic regulations, direct and control traffic, conduct investigations of vehicular accidents, thefts, first aid events, and other incidents as necessary. Police Officers investigate and submit written reports on crime-related offenses, traffic accidents or stops, complaints, policy violations, and suspicious activities. In the course of this work, officers may apprehend and detain suspects, issue summons to violators, collect and safeguard evidence needed for prosecution, and give testimony in court or as part of the student conduct process. Police Officers perform traffic and crowd control on college property and adjacent city or county streets as authorized. Officers will assist visitors by offering directions and general information, posting directional signs for special events, and raising and lowering the flag daily. Officers may transport suspects to the Magistrate to be processed and to acquire warrants and may transport individuals in need of crisis intervention for behavioral health assessment. Police Officers respond to calls for routine, non-emergency, and emergency services, rendering first aid and/or CPR while awaiting the arrival of medical personnel. Police Officers safeguard college personnel and property by conducting security checks and building inspections, unlocking and securing exterior and interior doors, providing escort services upon request, and patrolling parking lots and adjacent roadways. Police Officers will operate communication equipment and perform duties associated with dispatch, photo identification, parking permit issuance, and special assignments as required. Officers may be required to perform other duties as assigned as necessary, appropriate, and/or available. Special Assignments
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications
• Must possess and maintain an unincumbered and unexpired Virginia (DCJS) law enforcement officer certification as a sworn police officer in accordance with the Code of Virginia § 15.2-1705 and related Code sections or be able to obtain certification within one year.
• Must meet all annual and ongoing requirements for training and certification as listed in Physical Demands with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Must be able to work an irregular schedule, under varied conditions, at all College campuses and sites. Knowledge:
• Thorough knowledge of the applicable laws and regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia and the Virginia Peninsula Community College.
• Working knowledge of federal Title IX laws, the Clery Act, and best practices in Campus Threat Assessment.
• Comprehensive knowledge of use, care, and safety requirements for firearms and non-lethal equipment.
• Comprehensive knowledge of security and safety concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
Skills:
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Proficient skills in the use of all police equipment relevant to the job and the qualification of the carried assigned weapon.
