Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: RN Specialty: Neuro Stepdown & Epilepsy Monitoring Unit Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Required Certifications: BLS, NIHSS, ACLS preferred Must-Have: Strong Neuro experience History of caring for stroke patients NIHSS certification in hand at the time of submission Experience with higher acuity neuroscience patients Understanding of patient management protocols Description: This position involves nursing care in a stepdown unit specializing in neuroscience and epilepsy monitoring. The unit has a total of 31 beds, with 25 designated as stepdown and 6 for the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU). Nurse to patient ratios are 1:3 for stepdown and 1:5-6 for the EMU. The role includes experience with external ventricular drains (EVDs) and management of stroke and seizure patients. Nurses are expected to implement neurointervention protocols when necessary. Although some titration of drips may occur, it is primarily done per physician's orders. Charge nurse supervision is available 24/7, and nurse aids are present to support the nursing staff. Respiratory therapy is available around the clock, with the understanding that the nurses will not be responsible for vent settings. Monitoring equipment is present, and nurses are not required to read telemetry strips. Traveling nurses must be flexible with scheduling, working holidays and weekends as required. An orientation program specific to the unit is included for new hires.
