Instrument Mechanic

Troubleshoots, installs, repairs and adjusts indicating, recording and controlling instruments and valves. Reads schematics and understands digital control systems and valves, transmitters and transducers. Maintains and troubleshoots pH equipment, hydrocarbon and H2S detectors, and furnace oxygen analyzers. *Please see required testing for this position outlined below. Job Duties Install, repair, maintain and calibrate indicating, recording, and controlling pneumatic and electronic instruments to measure and control process variables, such as pressure, flow, level, temperature, motion, force, and chemical composition using hand tools and precision instruments. Disassemble malfunctioning instruments, examine and test mechanism and circuitry for defects. Troubleshoot equipment in or out of control loops and replace or repair defective parts. Reassemble instrument, test and calibrate assembly for conformance with specifications using test instruments such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, manometers, smart communicators and pressure instruments. Inspect instruments periodically and make minor calibration adjustments to assure they are functioning within specified controlled variables. Repair control valves and positioners and troubleshoot and repair low voltage electrical control systems. Perform shutdown testing on all types of instrumentation switches and controls as identified in Shutdown Procedures. Test, troubleshoot, repair or replace, calibrate, and reinstall electrical and electronic instrumentation and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC). Operate testing equipment and interpret test results. Identify process flow and location of pneumatic and electronic instrumentation using P&ID and Loop Sheets to troubleshoot instrumentation problems. Terminate wiring in control room and junction box and connect electronic device to the instrumentation. Install pneumatic or process piping/tubing to the instrumentation. Other duties may include some or all of the following: Report incidents timely and identify potential environmental problems and take action to prevent incidents; identify and communicate unsafe conditions to the supervisor; ensure work is in accordance with safety policies; participate in monthly safety audits and equipment audits; conduct pipefitting, truck driving, forklift, and manlift duties; maintain and repair process instruments, control systems, analyzers and electrical power systems in the refinery; order equipment and supplies; and special assignments as directed by supervisor. Special assignments or tasks assigned to the employee by their supervisor, as determined from time‑to‑time is their sole and complete discretion. Testing Requirement All candidates must complete a Safety and Craft Specific Test at Tulsa Technology Center to be considered for this position. Testing date and time will be determined by candidate during scheduling. Experience Three years of industrial, chemical plant, or refinery experience is required. A comprehensive physical examination must be satisfactorily completed. A drug screen is part of the physical. Experience troubleshooting, installing, repairing, and calibrating pneumatic and electronic process control instruments and valves. Education Level A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Technical Degree or Electronics Degree or training preferred. Required Skills Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently, cope with several problems or projects at the same time, make decisions and take responsibility, read and interpret blueprints and control loop sheets, troubleshoot and repair intermittent failures on process control equipment, strong analytical skills, knowledge of mathematics for accurate calculations, ability to read electrical schematics and draw simple work sketches, strong background in instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, knowledge of refinery instrumentation and P&ID, loop sheets, control valves, recorders, controllers, and process control valves, good verbal and written communication skills, mechanical ability, computer literate, comprehend and follow verbal instructions, rules and regulations, job and safety related, proficient in precision test and calibration equipment, knowledge of the four primary process variables, flow, level, pressure, temperature, thermocouples “J” and “K”, and basic understanding of Honeywell TDC Distributed Control systems. Preferred Skills Experienced with the maintenance of distributive control systems, analyzers, and PLC expertise helpful. Ability to maintain and troubleshoot pH equipment, hydrocarbon and H2S detectors, and furnace oxygen analyzers is a plus. Work Conditions Petroleum refinery based, industrial environment. The position will work indoors and outdoors, in all weather conditions including wet or humid conditions and inclement weather. Work may involve dust, dirt, chemicals, petroleum products, and confined spaces, heights, moving mechanical parts, rotating equipment, pressure valves and tanks, noise and vibration, electrical hazards, and hazardous, toxic, and flammable materials. Must be flexible to changing schedules and willing to work overtime as business needs require, including weekend work, callouts, and rotating 12‑hour shift schedules at times. Physical Requirements Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, grip, hold, operate various power and hand tools, make precise hand and finger movements, lift, carry, climb, walk, stand, sit, stoop, kneel, push, reach, talk, hear, climb stairs and ladders, and have a sense of balance. Able to lift or carry up to 50 pounds and push/pull 50 pounds. Able to hear alarms, emergency horns, and make visual inspections. Ability to reach overhead and at or below shoulder level. Physically demanding position requiring a large portion of time spent standing, walking, and handling materials on various surfaces including gravel, dirt, grass, concrete, stairs, vehicles, and uneven surfaces. Work may be required in confined spaces, restricted areas, and at various heights up to 200 ft depending on refinery unit/area. Must operate and drive company vehicles, hold a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. Must wear personal protective equipment including flame‑retardant clothing; use SCBA and inline breathing air periodically required.
